one answer: why not both?

i feel like i should have a checklist flowchart style formula that spits out responses to ms. monahan’s pieces...

1. some personal and mean spirited slag about a male celebrity rock climber... check.
2. call out of an extended list of white rock climbing celebrities... check.
3. lack of explanation for why the author is so personally invested in this particular story... check.
4. some valid points worthy of consideration intermixed with the vitriol... check.
5. a carbon copy of much of the writing and points we’ve seen her bring up in the past... check.
6. black and white condemnation without many real solutions offered... this one’s more grey for sure, but i’d still give it at least a half a check mark.
7. and etc.

EQUALS

i might be more interested in some of her, what are often from my perspective, valid points, if i understood why she was so personally invested and if i didn’t have to wade through a bunch of unnecessary, from my perspective, negativity [for ex. not sure why she keeps going to tommy’s presentations if she’s so over them]

oh well... looks like at least a few of us find her ideas worth talking about, so i’m sure she’ll keep writing as long as there is an audience...

I kind of speedread the thing, at least the firt half or so, but didn't see really a worthy explanation as to why the word is a appropriation. I began to feel like what I was reading was kind of "blah, blah, blah...." in an "I'm too sexy for my words" way, and gave up.

But not before noticing that when the author was referring to someone(was it Tommy Caldwell?) she inserted at "thought comment" that started out "Bro...."

So, yeah....not really impressed with the writing.

Is this for real? "Slay" is a word that only African Americans are allowed to use?

I snoozed through most of what used to be called "Sunday School", but I seem to recall a whole lot of slaying in the bible. And I think it features fairly prominently in a most ancient religions.

But now you can't say it if your ancestors aren't African?

Bullshit to the max.

The same heresy of appropriation of culture is under discussion in the Foodie world.

Complaints are mostly focused on one culture taking the foods of another and claiming to accurately represent those products. In cruder terms, how can an Anglo possibly cook and serve "authentic" Mexican without having a native's indigenous cultural understanding of the ingredients.

Actually witnessed this line of thinking at a Food Truck where a Hispanic guy was serving Pork Bahn Me sandwiches. Some earnest young man steps up and begins berating the hell out of the cook about stealing Vietnamese culture from his people and how he should sell his truck to a Vietnamese or quit making Bahn Me.

Luckily, this was in Santa Ynez and a couple of hungry local Cowboys told the kid to f-off so everyone did get to eat.

But if we are going to start screaming "racism" when it comes to food then there goes all of the cool ethno-fusion foods that I have learned to enjoy.

So-called "cultural appropriation" is perhaps the most asinine wad of politically correct phlegm to be coughed up from the rank ranks of social justice warriors. I'm sure there are some decent individual members of this clan, but as a group? Gah.

Chew on this: If cultural appropriation is so vial, NO ONE who is not of Scottish decent should be allowed to use antibiotics. Fortunately, I've got a big chunk of Scottish in my family tree, so I'm cool. To hell with something as transient and inconsequential as a word or food. We're talking life and death here, biotches. Antibiotics were first invented by a Scottish scientist, Alexander Fleming. I would think, at the very least, to legitimately use any antibiotic, you'd have to be English, which is pushing it but at least close--same island and all even if the damn English did give the Scots a lot of hell.

Once you go down this stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid path, the whole world simply falls apart. Anyone who subscribes to this shyte is a screaming moron.

PS: I find the title to the video charming and funny. The video itself was strangely narcissistic even if I do greatly admire the skill and accomplishments of the climbers featured.

Making fun of climbing videos or locating the precise location of white privilege in climbing videos is low hanging fruit. I would argue that this author could take her ideas and create something meaningful beyond the type of essays she learned to write in school.

Intellectuals have written themselves out of relevance. Case in point - climate science and the lack of effective policy. Tossing in low brow language like "bro" and "bitches" doe not count as coming out from your ivory tower.

I respect the concept of addressing social justice and outdoor recreation but selling t-shirts and tank tops and posting college style essays does not seem like the makings of a movement. Perhaps I'm wrong.

A discussion about something like this at FaceLift (facilitated by an elder) has potential

I guess white males of an age to hang out here are condemned to live in the world of Gomer Pyle, Hogan's Heros, and the Beav. I guess that no one would claim we were stealing that culture.

Huh? The author of that article has some decent points about culturally insensitive travel.
But choosing to pick on use of the word "slay"? That word is Germanic in origin, so pretty hard to say blacks originated/own the term.
And the metal band Slayer existed a long time before Beyonce used the term.

Oy ... that whole article is a mess. Where do you begin?
...

.... well for one thing I'm pretty sure the Old Testament cornered the market on the word "slay" some time ago. If anyone should be outraged about cultural insensitivity, it should be the Canaanites.
