There was a tsunami warning 8 hours ago, I see no thread about it? How does the warning systems work? Weren't you alerted to it?
On the other hand, tthere was 5 earthquakes in California just today. I guess it's not such a big deal.

"Tsunami watch is cancelled for coastal areas of WA, OR and CA. A small tsunami was generated in AK, but this event does not pose a threat to WA, OR or CA coastal areas. #tsunami"

There was an earthquake M 7.9 - 280km SE of Kodiak, Alaska.

An earthquake of that magnitude has the potential for significant ground uplift. Uplift under the surface of the ocean is what generates a tsunami as the whole water column is shifted.

All scientists can do is put out a warning based on the magnitude and the epicenter, especially if the epicenter is offshore. Just because you have a big earthquake doesn't necessarily mean you will get a significant tsunami.

Ring of Fire has been active the last few days. Volcano in the Phillipines, volcano in Japan, earthquake off the Alaskan coast, and earthquake in the Gulf of California.

The so called big one is some decades late, isn't it?

I was in Japan in the eighties and we studied earthquake safe buildings. I always wondered if there really exists such things. Can anything be earthquake safe, if the quake is really big?

And I also wonder about what Dingus usually says, that the valley is safe. But there's rifts on both side of it. Shouldn't it get flooded?

It does indeed seem as the Ring of Fire is on a roll.

Hi Dingus

yes, I remember you taking about the age of the valley.

I didn't really mean by the tsunami.
I was thinking that when the tectonic plates finally reach the breaking point of pent up stress and release the big one, it would upset the geography enough to open up towards the Pacific at Suisun bay and San Pablo bay, for instance.

Because while both the Calaveras fault and Hayward fault have creeping segments, there are locked segments around them grinding against each other, which could cause it all to move.

Actually, the Ring has been rather quiescent the last three or four days.
That’s when you start worrying.

A few places around here had warning horns blaring and firemen going around knocking on doors to alert people. Other places slept through it. The warning was cancelled a few hours after being issued when it was determined that the earth had shifted sideways instead of up/down.

We know we should be prepared.

We may need to know more about what we should be prepared for:

Josie Osborne, the mayor of Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island, was ready in a few minutes to leave her home after getting a warning text but said she pondered what shoes to wear in case she wouldn’t ever be back.

hey there say, lollie... thanks for sharing...

and, say, dingus-- thanks for all the info you share, too...

and to all:

oh my, yes, we do miss juan-- (jeff) he shared earthquakes, fast!

i tried to do it, since then, but, i am not always on-line...
and, a few others have GOTTEN UP the ol' earthquake post...

last night, i was 'having pup-dog issues' and was off line...
will go look and read about it...

i was also going to repost the newest about the volcano, yet,
i am not sure there was an interest, so i help that back...
though, the indonesian one, we got good info and feedback
here, on that one...

the philippine volcano, i think, though, could be a bigger trouble,
wheww... sure hope not... but-- time will tell...

edit:
wow, say, MH 2, thanks for the share...

I like what you said
The Valley is where mountains go to die
That’s sweet!

However...

The valley sediments are very deep and serve as a cushion too.

Not sure if I understood you correctly but
soft soils amplify ground shaking.
