When Laura Bradbury went missing from her family campsite at Indian Cove in Joshua Tree in October of 1984, I felt compelled to get involved. Over the course of the next 2 1/2 years, I spent 162 days searching. I never found anything related to Laura, but what I did find was a passion for SAR.

Over the years, I've had many opportunities to share stories from my SAR career, and often people would suggest I put them down in book form.

I've kept a climbing journal since 1975, and years of writing reports for the Sheriff added to my huge pile of resource material. I had LOTS to glean from, I just needed a focus.

I began writing outlines, trying to figure out the scope of the book. Early on, it became clear to me that I wanted this book to be educational. Not only to depict what SAR teams do, but through my mistakes in the mountains, and those of a handful of others, we might all learn something.

I kicked this book idea around for 20 years, but could not decide on how to end it. Then on July 17, 2013, Matthew Greene went missing, and I immersed myself in this case. After spending the following summer out in the search zone with his father, I knew I had found a compelling way to finish the book.

Last December, the time had come. I wrote The Shortest Straw in 7 weeks. My editor and I spent the next few months publishing it, and it hit the market July 5, 2017.

I kicked off a book tour in late July, and have been traveling the country not only promoting the book, but giving educational presentations based on the book. My speaking dates are posted on the website. If you'd like to suggest a venue for me, you can email me through the website.

Signed copies of the book are also available on the site. Order one before Christmas and I will include my company logo sticker for your vehicle for free. Also available on Amazon, in both print and ebooks form.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your book and highly recommend it to anyone considering buying it. I have to admit that the chapter about Pete had me choked up, I really miss him.

Ditto, zBrown, but I thought that was a good pun, myself.
Maybe we could decide by drawing straws?
Longer straw, not funny / Shorter straw, hilarious

Good luck with the book, Dean. Or should I say good luck with the link? Either way, good luck.

Good to see you posting Dean. Glad things are going well with your book. Need to pick one up soon but was hoping I could do it at a book tour event.
You have any plans to come to San Diego or nearby during the tour?
Have a great Christmas and New Years!!

I loved the book Dean. It was right up my alley. Many of those stories are SAR legends, especially around here. It was good to get the full details.

Thanks, Tom....right up your alley, indeed! Sure glad you enjoyed it!

Sounds like you're still serving with Inyo SAR......good on ya! I really enjoyed working with you all on missions over the years. The one Harrington and I did up on the U-Notch stands out as an all-time classic. Good times.....especially when lives are saved. : )

I'm off to Napa this morning for a speaking engagement with their SAR team and a few others from around the area.

Best to you, Tom.....hope and pray the family is doing well. Merry Christmas!
