We spent last week in Canada. All the parcks were closed for the season yet there was no problem parking the camper in the visitor centers or in front of the closed gates. The rangers would drive by in the morning and wave. Try that in the gud ol USA and they will lock you up and throw away the key... saw more cops on my way to work yesterday than I did in a week and 1,500 miles in Canada...

Got to Cap de Gaspé Nat Park a little early, like June 2, and there was still snow on the ground AT SEA LEVEL! You could drive into the park but the campgrounds were closed. It was late in the day so we set up the tent at a pique-nique area. The next morning we hear some dood clearing his throat. We look out and see Ranger Guillaume standing there looking quite embarrassed. He fell all over himself asking our foregiveness for disturbing us but, after we had brekky, could we, no rush mind you, kindly pack up?

”WTF? DON’T TAZE ME, BRO!”

too bad the tools give NPS such a tight-assed paintywaist gestalt. I do agree that the problem is that there are just too damn many people visiting our US parks.

BLM land is where it's at these days, AFAIAC.

This is not just about national parks where aparently here in Amerika they jack you up for wearing the wrong ball cap. I am talking about the entire fcking system. What is more free that packing it up in a van or truck and hitting the road sleeping where you will. Well out west its reasonable but here in the east it sucks. But even out west you still have the cops eyeballing you just waiting for you to screw up. The whole speed trap bullsh#t. Hyper critical inspections where one stupid idiot light will keep you from getting a sticker. Everything is about punishement and what you can't do. You feel it the min you cross the border. Of course the tone is set up by the jacked up boarder guard who looks and acts like a stone cold killer. How about a f*#king smile and welcome home. WTF!!

In total agreement with you on the east thing.
And the Canada thing as well.

I have always felt from living out west twice ,once in Cali and the other in Colorado, that westerners benefit from public lands and wide open spaces.

Here in the thickly settled east, not so much.
At least you have a few National forest’s over there.

Here in NY,you will get busted for sleeping in your van.

I know.

Cheers Nick!

was rousted in NH last fall on forest service land because it was not a designated campsite. Got popped a few months ago for going 45mph and the cop was a complete dick about it. You have a choice out there if you want to help people or punish people. This as#@&%e was out to punish.

Fck You Russ. How about instead of telling me to leave my country why not try to make our country better. Is it too late to get the police state genie back in the bottle?

Being told you can't camp in an area that is not designated for camping is not exactly an exclusive east coast experience.
As for cops- you live near Woodstock- it is what it is...(a fake town full of rich folks who insist on a high police presence)

Yeah, SEBC is my favorite zone and the people are just nice, good mannered 'giv-r' types of folks at least that has been my experience with the bikers, skiers and coffee drinkers! I have never been to a cooler town or met nicer than in Nelson BC.

One AM hanging out at Oso Negro having some coffee I see a dready woman breast feeding, a couple old geezers rolling J's on a frisbee and a cop and lawyer looking dude cruising into grab a coffee on the way to the courthouse, everybody said there AM greetings and smiled and continued about their day. I was impressed and it was just nice to be in a place where folks choose to pat each other on the back regardless of differences(the above is one example, I have many more from just about each visit) rather than grunt, act standoffish or the general flipping of the bird.

They seem to understand 'free' and the social responsibility that it comes with better than most of my fellow countryfolk, so it seems...

I thought this thread was about Canada?

So a friend, her hubby, and two doggies headed up there a couple months ago. Boy, was she surprised, and way pissed, when the Canuck Customs nazis totally pulled their car apart, which was packed to the max for a month long trip thru Canuckistan. Yeah, a couple of well off retired Murricans, one whom is a volunteer Forest Service ranger, coming up to spend money, and they get treated like that? Then The Tool found her can of bear spray (they were headed for some hiking in grizz country) and he threatened them with a phukking felony? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

We are just as stoopid as the Muricans.
However we have not made guns and climate change denial religions.
We are NOT free, just more moderate.

Canadian Customs assumes every American crossing their border is packing heat, and they don't take "no" for an answer until they ask four or five times.
