Our nation (Canada) is in mourning today. Gord and the hip have touched a lot of people.

Indeed - Canada's had a death in the family.
Just heard that CTV's running "Long Time Running" commercial-free Friday night.

So sad. A spokesman and poet for my Canadian generation. You will be missed Gord.

was never really a fan... never went to a concert... and never owned an album...
yet can probably recognize and appreciate more hip songs than a lot of bands i am/have been a fan of. and so in retrospect and while listening to a couple dozen songs over the last bit, i have to say i find it beautiful that:
they managed to become the backing soundtrack for much of an epoch/place while never becoming muzak [even if they were sometimes used as it]...
they embraced the success they did have, seemingly without trying to endlessly be MORE...
they repeatedly captured something without shouting it...
and they created a body of work of incredibly consistent quality and resonance without seemingly ever becoming overhyped...
so while in some ways it's too late, a thanks to downie and co for the strangely beautiful often slightly melancholic soundtrack that they managed to create for many canadians...
whether we were outright devotees... or not.
[and fUck me... even if they had done not a thing else... that wheat kings song in and of itself would have been enough to make them a national treasure... what an unbelievably beautiful response to an unbelievable tragedy...]

And the best line about hockey in a song:
You said you didn't give a f*#k about hockey
And I never saw someone say that before

The final Hip show a little over a year ago turned into one of the most fantastic displays of community and togetherness I've been lucky enough to witness in Squamish.
We left home on bikes because we knew parking downtown would be ridiculous. As we rode, we were joined my more and more people at every intersection who had the same idea. By the time we got downtown, there was a nearly constant stream of families on bikes, and car traffic was brought to a standstill.
The entire block of second avenue was shut down between the library and city hall for a glorious summer street concert. Local retailers had put together the equipment for the simul-cast of the concert. Even though it was a sunny summer afternoon in Squamish, we were treated to a bright, huge projection screen and quality sound.
There were probably in excess of 3000 people in that one block and the adjacent park, and everyone behaved themselves on this special occasion. Open beer was ignored by the RCMP, random strangers hugged when they realized they had the same Hip concert t-shirts from 25 years ago, and everyone danced and cried together.
I've been lucky enough to see the Hip live on several occasions, including as a bunch of teenagers before their first album even came out. Nothing however, will touch the passion of this final show. A pure display of friendship, love, togetherness, the search for truth, and national pride.
Thanks for the fantastic memories Gord Downie, Paul Langlois, Rob Baker, Gord Sinclair and Johnny Fay.
