I am a COMPLETELY new female climber going to my very first outside climbing class next weekend. Under the heading "What to Wear" it says to wear lose fitting pants. Although this is my first climbing class, I've done many other sports and am most comfortable in yoga style stretch pants. Are these pants a bad choice and why? Any other tips on brands/styles would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!!!!!

Pahants?
Pants are a good idea,Tights will do, (think wear & TEAR!) like those yoga pants, thin clingy thingies that are famous for being revealing ?
they are great if paired with a second layer a running short/tights ensemble.

Yoga style pants these days tend to have a pretty low waist and flared lower legs.

Lowered waist is often uncomfortable because the waist on your harness needs to be fairly snug and unless you are wearing a longer cut t-shirt, the harness waist band can rub on you.
I personally don't like any kind of flared leg because I like to see my feet clearly, for footwork. In any kind of a breeze, those flared legs can flap around and generally be annoying.

I tend to wear longer cut shorts, capri cut pants, or full length tights, depending on the weather. Just my personal preference.

The yoga pants that I'm familiar with tend to be made with a soft almost fleece like material and seemed to be prone to snagging on both rock and climbing gear. Still, I think, except for the good point Phylp makes about being able to see your feet, for the first time out, yoga pants are fine.

Don't over think it. Wear what's comfortable, follow common sense, and you'll be fine. Just be aware if you might be in the sun a lot or exposed to poison oak in case your like wearing Capri, which exposes some skin. I highly doubt either would be the case as usually courses like that are well established and already tried and trued in terms of their settings.

You'll spend a lot of the time standing around listening anyway. I suspect they warn against "lose fitting pants" mainly not wanting students to wear clothes that restrict their movements on the trails or on the wall; even then, it's never the end of the world.

Enjoy!

You can always google "Female Rock Climbers" if you want to see all the latest trends...

But seriously, as a beginner you are more likely to do things like use your knees on the rock, something you won't do so much as you gain experience. You might not want to wear your newest most expensive active wear first time out. Regardless, freedom of movement is key.

Wear what is comfortable and what you don't mind getting dirty.
I bought some cheap tights for climbing as I don't want to wear my lululemon tights and ruin them when I flail.
I recently got a pair of straight leg/slim fit stretchy pants from Mountain Equipment Coop and they're nice because they're not all baggy at the ankles and roll up neatly, and they look good enough to wear on the street (ie: they're flattering).
Also got some BD Notion pants. They're cotton but super stretchy and have the same tapered leg look and will be nice to wear now that it's getting cool up here.

I used to have a lycra outfit, tights and top, that was a good replica of lizard skin. That was the sh*t.

Edit: My wife, The Barbara, likes tights. As has been said already, there's a lot to be said for being able to see yer feet.

Wear comfortable , loose fitting pants that can endure some potential abrasion...nothing wrong with using your knees. No rocket science here.

Running tights it is!!!! ;) I know to many of you it probably seemed like a stupid or "lame" question, but I've done enough sports to know that sometimes clothing is the difference between a good day and a very uncomfortable day (I.e. Cycling with proper fitting bike shorts or backpacking with a synthetic shirt) Unfortunately in some sports you don't know until you do it, so it's helpful as a newbie to get experienced advice--like I would've never known to buy pants where you can see your feet or where the waist was high enough so that the harness wasn't rubbing on skin---you just helped make my first climb lots more comfortable, THANK YOU!!!!!

really? well ok! here, then I'll go further out on the limb of appropriate-Ness whats important here is that KGoodie gets the straight poop.

HAY!kGOODIE, Im sure glad that you took all the give and take and choose to go with the advise OF OTHERS & that came from the Gnome ofthe Diabase.

(given the introduction that i've received from the peanut gallery, en' dem darn rhatzs)

THIS FROM from my wife, and a few dozen other women that I climbed with or taught to climb over the last 30yrs.

Wearing Layers May help when the view from below may be more of a show, Than you may have intended or meant it to be . . .
The same goes for side boob & decolletage, (anyone use that word?)

most of my climbing days were spent in the same canvas duck work trousers that served me well in construction.
but now that i've "moved up" 10-12" in waist size, i'm dismayed to find that they think i need 5-6" added to the cuffs ...

they can still be folded to double up on the knees tho, allowing plenty of room
for ferret entry from below and a whole bunch of candy bar storage from above!

but don't pay any attention to me, i'm still burdened with psychological scar tissue from this event:

(If this question is for real)...where are you climbing?

Climate and rock type can apply.

as a side question: What's up with the return of obnoxious skin-tight brightly-patterened lycra? Ive seen entirely too many bulgie-asses and camel- toes lately-(mostly recently in West Virginia... where they evidently didn't get the cease and desist memo 20 years ago) but it's been creeping back to the west coast. Sorry- You may be able to see your feet but it's not a pretty sight for us on the ground.

Reilly, About those knickers, you gotta inside line? I outgrew mine about 2 decades ago and have not been able to replace them. I LOVE knickers for cross country skiing on old wooden skis - retro is where itz at. I still have plenty of knicker sox, just no knickers to go with them. I could die a happy man if I could get a new pair of knickers.

Nick, it wouldn't take a Savile Row tailor to set you up. And you could use the bits you lop off to make those forearm protectors you used to see on Gunsmoke.
