hey there, say, all... wow, HAS anyone heard about this, in news, yet?
not sure how OFTEN we have 'volcano' warnings, :O
(though, i have heard of the fears, as to if mt rainier, starts up) ...

BALI, Indonesia (AP) — More than 35,000 people have fled a menacing volcano on the Indonesian tourist island of Bali, fearing it will erupt for the first time in more than half a century as increasing tremors rattle the region.
The numbers Sunday from disaster officials are more than double previous estimates and are continuing to rise, they say. It includes people who left voluntarily as well as those told to evacuate from a 9-12 kilometer (6-8 mile) zone around Mount Agung.
Authorities raised the volcano's alert status to the highest level Friday following a "tremendous increase" in seismic activity. Its last eruption in 1963 killed 1,100 people.
Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, a senior Cabinet minister, said Sunday that the districts surrounding the volcano "must be prepared for the worst."
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency has praised the welcoming response of local communities on Bali to the flood of evacuees.

I spent some time in Indonesia last month, surrounded by volcanoes. It is a danger they live with. Presumbably, the volcanoes gave birth to the islands.
We went one day, to a deserted island. High above the tide line, was the storm line. It was marked by volcanic boulders that were washed in. So when the Tsunamis arrive, they are accompanied by rocks. Certainly no one should build below that line.

Neebee, We have a house in Bali on the beach in the village of Amed, which is very near Mt Agung. Our friends there are nervous and the town is taking care of 700 refugees that have fled their homes closer to the mountain. Many minor quakes and projected imminent eruption. The pictures are of the mountain taken from our house. Keeping our fingers crossed!

I did some diving years ago at Tulamben, which is at the base of Gurung Agung. The bottom is black volcanic sand from the big eruption in 1963.
It caused a beached WW2 American ship to tumble offshore in 30 m of water hence the world's easiest wreck dive.
Many people and villages were lost in that eruption.

wow, we DO SOME climbers HERE, THAT ARE connected to this
dire warning, situation...
prayers for all the folks, and those that are waiting this out, and
hope, HOPE, HOPE and pray and wait...
say, brock, it is a lovely lovely place...
SIDE NOTE, and about my post, here:
ever since i was a little kid, (perhaps i had seen too many national georgraphic?) but-- i always loved those islands, and wanted to read about the people, of indonesian areas... (also, loved the alps, and matterhorn, but THAT does not apply here)...
well, so, when i SAW ALL THIS danger, well, i was thinking of the all those folks that live there, and how NOT many options, or, perhaps, some,
may have had none???
but, these folks, that we heard about on the link, were able to, and
had-to/DID evacuate-- thankful that now a days, there are ways to warm, evacuate, etc, but STILL, :O
SAY, RIELLY, AND STUDLY... AND THEBRAVECOWBOY (and, guido again)...
thank you for the mention of history, as to krakatoa, :O
and the book...
as, a kid, i hear the title: "krakatoa, east of java"
BUT IT WAS JUST A MOVIE...
HOWEVER-- IT TRIGGERED me to go read and find out what was true, etc...
i will go try to read the books as soon as i can...
thank you ALL VERY much for sharing here...
let's as brock said, hope and wish and pray, and whatever
we can do-- for all these folks...

Just a few more thoughts about Bali and the people that live there. Much of their lives are intimately involved with their spiritual beliefs, and blessing and ceremonies are a part of everyday life. When we built our house we also built five shrines on the property. Several were "protective" shrines, and the others were to an "old man" spirit present when we started construction, and to two children spirits who came along later and liked the property so much they decided to stay. When you are in Bali and you're truly "present" there is a certain truth to these beliefs. We may see the eruption of Agung as just the physical reality of living on the ring of fire, but to the Balinese the mountain is very much a sacred God, and that God is not happy! I've climbed the mountain several times and before we could actually set off for the 5000 foot ascent we had a 4am purification ceremony at the temple that accesses the route. From one persons Balinese perspective... "this (the volcanic activity) is happening because the mountain spirits are angry that the mountain is being disrespected by climbers climbing on their periods or not having the appropriate time space from someone close to them dying." These are essentially the same restrictions the Balinese have for temple visits, and this mountain is sacred to them!

say, it is good that you kept respect for them, as to all the customs...
before you did climb...
and, WHEN you built, there...
wow, but sadly, due to the ring-or-fire, these mts, may blow again,
and they folks won't be able to stop them, :(
though, they wish to 'try their best, to be good' as they
can be, for their land, and others that live there, :(
say side note:
when did you first find that area, and how did it come to pass, that
could buy? stay, and live there?
it is good that the locals understand you (or, somewhat?)
and that you understand them, :)

For those of you who are interested, the following report is from friends living in Bali who are receiving updates from the volcanologists at station on Mt. Agung where they are monitoring the seismic activity. The following is the news as of 6AM today.
There is white smoke rising from the crater. This means increased thermal activity & the expectation is that Agung could blow at any time. The prevailing winds are coming from Australia and blowing N-NE. That will keep the airport clear for at least several more weeks when the winds might shift direction. There are sirens all around the mountain that will start sounding 2 hrs before the eruption occurs as a warning for anyone who might still be within 8-12 kms of the crater. That is the death zone and everyone has been evacuated. In the event of a huge blow, the 2nd tier evacuation will then begin for anyone within 16-24 kms. Many villages in the 2nd tier have already evacuated to avoid being stuck in traffic. People in the 2nd tier may be asked to be ready to leave from 2 hrs to 2 weeks depending on what happens. MOST REFUGEES ARE IN WELL ORGANIZED & SUPPLIED CAMPS WITH FOOD, WATER & SHELTER. OTHERS HAVE MOVED IN WITH FAMILY MEMBERS ACROSS BALI IN SAFE ZONES. Predictions are that only some areas of Karangasem will be affected. Safe zones include Candi Dasa, Amed, Singaraja, Ubud, Gianyar, Kuta, South & West/ NW Bali.

Volcanos do not burn rock so...they do not "smoke". Visible emissions are either ash eruptions (fine dust- to sand- or pebble-sized rock particles) and/or water steam or some combination of both. Either can be dangerous.

hey there say, brock... THANK you... i have been wondering, and wanted to try to see what was going on, but, wow-- i had TWO friends to help, on ONE day, and a surprise help, today, and-- i actually got to help my SELF, today, also, :)
thanks for the keeping us informed on you, and the others...
good to know that they have food and water, so far, :)
