It is great to have stuff in life but at the same time stuff doesn’t seem to last. Monday 9/18 I came home from work to find my house trashed. Somebody in the afternoon broke in through the back bedroom window and went through every cabinet and drawer in the house. All of my electronic stuff was stolen. A backpack of climbing gear also stolen and 8 baseball card frames filled with 175 climbing cards was taken as well. The thief must have been mesmerized looking at my 20,000+ pieces of gear on the walls and didn’t know what to do with it so the climbing museum gear survived!!! Unfortunately all of my data supporting the museum is now lost. I had a few hidden external backups of the info but those were stolen as well. Yesterday I purchased a new computer in hope that the iCloud system worked and iCloud hardly saved anything more than what was on my phone. So the last 10 years of 38,000 photos on iPhoto of my kids growing up and the museum and all video etc is completely gone. Over the last two years I spent thousands of hours making lists of the gear I have in the museum and shooting photos. Now the process starts over from scratch. At least I have the kids and the gear so all is great in that respect. Just feels like a lot of time lost sitting at a computer. I don’t believe the thief was a climber otherwise more climbing stuff would be missing. The thief probably thought the climbing cards were collectable baseball cards.

The key item here is the 175 climbing cards of which the majority was signed. Besides the cards that already have signatures on them, listed as “autograph” cards, the other non autograph cards that have autographs on them should be a key indication that they probably came from my museum. If anybody sees these cards please get in contact with me. The police were notified and visited saying that other houses in the neighborhood have also been broken into recently and they have a few leads on who the thieves are, but no arrests yet. Once again I moved the museum into a storage building to hide from the world. Sucks to have this much history and not have a big secure place to show it. Someday!

This is awful on a personal level and for the community of climbers. You have been such a great keeper of the knowledge. Hopefully we can help you partially recover. I do not have much in the way of collectibles, but I have a Lynn Hill card I found somewhere, I will give you. I am sure someone has a connection to get it signed.

The collection of cards is going to be tough to fence.

Very sorry to hear about this. The loss of family photos has to hurt. And, having your home burglarized makes you feel violated.

There is hope that the cards might show up and should be relatively easy to identify - provided you gave/give a detailed list on the written police report (these are essential to recovering stolen property).

Glad it wasn't worse, if that is any consolation.

I'm sorry for your loss, for the sickening feeling you experienced on the discovery of the theft, and for the hell you'll go through recovering data.

Best of luck to you in that, also.

Good Question...

Oh man, that is a major bummer. So sorry to hear.

Just as an aside, backing up to HDs is a good idea but keeping them in the same building not so. Same thing could happen (loosing them) if you'd had a fire or some other unexpected thing happen.

A little late now but for others, I'd suggest keeping back ups in 3 locations somewhere else as well. That way if something does happen ( robbery, fire, hurricane...) you have at least have another to fall back on. I keep mine at home and copies at work. Use of the cloud as backup would be the 3rd way.
Doesn't help with the hard goods though...

Really sorry- hope they find the losers!

Shoot I'm really sorry to hear - that sucks! My condolences to you and what you're going through.

Much of the time I wish I had less stuff, and was less attached to the stuff that I do have, but I'd like to be the one in charge of that!

In the hopes that it helps you, I'll share that for me personally, sometimes I get too attached to the fallacy of sunk costs, and it just limits and constrains what I do in the future. Small consolation, I'm sure. Best wishes to you moving forward from here!

hey there say, marty... :O

oh my, say, i will pray and fast tomorrow, ... you NEVER EVER really know or understand what fasting, might, or can do-- until you do it...

marvelous things, and perfect timing, has happened ( not always, of course, but, in the majority, it HAS) ...

THE CRUCIAL thing, is timing, and that the police have leads...

say-- also, never hurts, but, go to all the local thrift stores,
and-- check any dumpsters???

(they may just ditch it, later, ?? if they realize they are not sure
what to do with it?) ...

could be someone in the neighborhoods, check trash cans IF they are out??

( i know, silly ideas, but, you NEVER know, for something so very special,
try anything... ) ...

put some notes for information at-- gas station bulletin boards?
(for sentimental reasons, you can state) ...
SAY, PUT A NOTE at the churches-- a family member may learn that
SOMEONE in their family is THIEF, this way??

CAN YOU contact ebay, in case someone wants to sell them there, and show the collection of photos, of these???

how about putting an add in the newspaper (as to sentimental reason?)
if a family member spots these at home, with a family member having them,
there again-- they learn there is a thief in their house???

then, of course, NONE of this may work...
just trying to add some 'keys' ... you never know what you can
do WITH the RIGHT key, IF you can get one...

hopes and prayers, for some kind of success...

very sad to hear this, and the LOSS of such great work, :(

may the police find a HUGE BINGO and my YOUR stuff be part of the
help, to do it... amen...

edit:
say, any other 'sell places' that you can contact on line, too??

neebee - When I got home from work and first saw the house trashed, I was in a state of confusion, but to answer your question, I live in Phoenix Arizona.

The good thing about my museum info being lost is that most of my research over the past few years I shared here on Supertopo, so hooray for Supertopo for being another backup for my research! Another good thing in a weird way is that I am divorced so all of the important moments in my kids life, graduations, projects, parties etc, there were two sets of photos taken. So if I need to refer back to my kids earlier years mama has photos of the events also. Good thing I remained good friends with mama!

Sucks to be looking at a blank computer but I can refill it over time. Good thing I still am old school so I still have paper files showing where and who gave me every item in the museum. Just have to go back through the files and reinsert it into the computer. Supertopo has many forum posts from Stephane Pennequin, Marlow, Steve Grossman etc that I can get research restored from, and Ashbys Vertical Archaeology site is a great resource of history as well. Gary Storrick already shares his Belay devices museum so the info is readily available for me, just have to find a few thousand hours to track info items down again.

Maybe this is the perfect time to look into creating the Karabin Climbing Museum website. This way the gear can remain protected in storage and I can still show the world my passion toward climbing gear history. Hmmmmm. Good things on the horizon. I move forward with a smile!

I stopped at many of the local pawn shops and stores that carry baseball cards and left them my info in case the climbing cards show up. All of the stores said they would not be interested in carrying the climbing cards. Not enough interest in them at all. However they all mentioned they will offer a low dollar amount to obtain the cards and give them back to me without interest. For now I am watching Craigs list and eBay. This is also a good lesson to have backups for the computer yes, but don't have the backups stored at the same address as the computer is. I can easily have a second and third backup stored at a different location. This also teaches me that iCloud is not a reliable source since you cannot personally manage the files in iCloud. You can only hope the files are there as it says they are there. My files were not there.

I have a few extra Hans Florine cards that the thieves overlooked and Hans was in town a few days ago. He signed the cards for me so the rebuilding process has already started.

If you use DropBox it will automatically back up your data on as many machines as you set up anywhere in the world. I run all my business off Dropbox, love it.

Hey Marty, that sucks and I remain cautiously hopeful that you'll get your stuff back. As an aside, I back my computer up with Carbonite, and it works flawlessly. You don't even have to do the backing up yourself--it's automatic every day. A website (as you have suggested) sounds like another reasonable back-up option.
