It only took 19 years but I finally finished it.

In mid-October, 2017 when my book is released it will be exactly that many years, almost to the day, since I took the first photograph (of Glen Dawson) for a portrait project that has since become much larger than I ever imagined.

It started in the 1990s, I simply wanted to photograph a few of the elder Sierra Nevada climbers, and I got them: Glen Dawson, Jules Eichorn, David Brower and others.
Then I photographed Bradford Washburn and from there it turned into an American project.
But then I got Riccardo Cassin and the trap door fell open and I’ve since gone literally around the world to photograph the greats, famous and not so much, that were active between the 1920s and 1970s.

Greg Child wrote an extensive essay, mostly historical, often personal, Homeric. Alex Honnold has written the foreword. I'm happy, lucky and proud to have them both involved.
In the preface I write about my travels and travails to hunt down, find and photograph these legends over the years, usually with a wallet no thicker than a Listerine Breath Strip.

Mountaineers Books is the publisher.

Thanks to the STers that assisted in any way big or small, there were quite a few, some of which were photographed for the book.

You can pre-order, or just read more about it, here:

I’ll have a dedicated website for the book by mid-September and will post that link further down on this thread when it’s ready. Some people have requested signed copies of the book, that’s where those will be available (or at an event if one happens near you).

If you’re on Instagram it’s here:

My regular website has some of the initial portraits on it:

The photo attached is the spine and front cover. The book comes inside an embossed black linen slipcase. I finally saw the finished thing two days ago, the construction, printing and binding is amazing. They did a really great job on that end.

Now, let the critiquing begin…

Thanks,

Thanks for the interest and kind words everyone.

Sad to hear that the Italian climber Armando Aste passed away two days ago, September 1, at 91 years of age.

Armando began climbing in the 1940s on the spire at Castel Corno above his hometown of Rovereto in northern Italy. By the close of that decade he was pedaling his bike 80 miles round-trip from his home up into the Brenta Dolomites to climb Campanile Basso and other mountains in the region. By 1950 he began a two-decade-long string of mountaineering success including the Aste-Susatti route on Monte Civetta, the Aste Route on Marmolada d'Ombretta, the first Italian ascent of the Eiger North Face in 1962 and many others.

In the summer of 2015 I spent a day with him at his home in Rovereto and photographed him for my book. A very soulful, sweet guy and we enjoyed each other's company, a nice lunch and shared a lot of laughs… despite not speaking a lick of each other’s language.

There are some interesting words about him, and by him, here:

Riposa in pace, Armando, e grazie.

With a foreward by Alex Honnold, an essay by Greg Child, and a GQ photographer, it looks promising.
