I read Post Office a couple of months ago. Great read. I tell the old lady that between Post Office and Hillbilly Elegy she should be able to figure me out.

I've looked at this poem, even listened to the words.

The image of rolling dice is not satisfying...who among us is willing to trust to luck?

Something just is not clicking, and it's not the dice in the cup so much as the fact that a person is willing to trust his dreams to luck.

Hard work, sobriety, that's the ticket.

Or is it?

WTF do I know, anyway?

Drop that poem, it's done its thing.

Move on to the next idea, as Kubowski himself wrote.

"I don't hate people, I just hate the way they smell when they've had too much to drink."--numerous individuals

I went through a Buk Phase, recently ended.

I have a young poet friend who started out on Neruda and came to ruin on Buk, eventually.

He worked with me in the bookstore while studying at the community's Junior College.

He hit bottom when he ordered a dozen of Buk's bewk Love Is A Dog From Hell so he could "spread the Bukowski wisdom." The store manager had them all returned but one copy.

He is now a grammar school teacher with two kids and a mortgage.

His favorite poem from that book is "Cows In Art Class."

I read it and it makes me think of Irish Spring soap, somehow.
