Hey there are many of us climbers in JT that are also teachers.

Our local school district is forcing us to attend a training next week at a homophobia spewing church: (trigger warning)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dWsBY22YMg#t=20m25s

They say there is no other venue that will hold us all, but Yucca Highs gym holds over 1000 people and last year we met at the junior college by Indian Cove.

one of our school board members tried to fight this at last nights board meeting, but the superintendent would not budge.

Can you help and email our superintendent and board members and let them know that using public employees to embrace homophobia is not ok?

What does the training have to do with homophobia? They're just using the building correct? They're not going to give you a sermon.

You need to cowboy up some free legal aid.
That's what gets bureaucrats' attention.

"What does the training have to do with homophobia? They're just using the building correct? They're not going to give you a sermon."

hope not.

Last time this happened they had church members as greeters, crosses up, bibles around, hymnals around, information about services on the wall, etc.

Its a veiled recruitment drive. This church has members on the town council and the school board. Ever watched footloose? its like that here.

Seems like hysteria to me.

If it's just the building being used- then what's the big deal?
It's seems they are training IN a church building as opposed to being trained BY the church

My highschol used church buildings from time to time. It was no big deal- no church members were discussing their beliefs and no one cared about the building being owned by the church

I can see the conflict of money going to the church to rent the space. But if it's the only option...

are people really that afraid of a building?

Are grown adults seriously worried about converting if exposed to a church?

Buy a lottery ticket because c wilmot and I agree on this one (though hysteria seems strong here). The venue isn't the issue, the message is. When those two become inseparable then you have a problem. Moreover, aren't you painting them with the same overly broad brush that you're accusing them of?

Have you spoken to CTA about this issue? I assume your teachers are part of the California Teachers Association and you pay monthly dues? This is totally the kind of fight our left leaning teachers union would like to get involved with.

Also, if the meeting is on a scheduled work day, any teacher who objects to the venue could take a personal day off. Assuming your teachers have access to personal days. It sucks to burn a personal day so early in the year but if you could rally enough teachers to take the day off, it might force your admin to reschedule or relocate the training.

My friend from Thailand said upon arrival in JT, " its like we traveled back in time". Sadly, she was right.

Anyone know a good :pro bono" civil rights / constitutional law attorney?

(don't read "pro boner", you'll go to hell)

BTW, this church kicks out Homosexuals, and anyone else on the LGBTQ spectrum.

OK, maybe hysterical wasn't completely off base. The conservative nature of that church is different than the purported reason for you going there, isn't it? You seem to bristle at what you believe MIGHT happen rather than what will happen. Is a cross offensive to you? If so, would you also argue that a Star of David or crescent is as well? I bet that lots of your Trump loving neighbors out there would agree with the latter. If so, are they any worse than you for taking issue with the former? I'm a lawyer. I took a couple of semesters of Con Law during law school, but if you walked into my office I'd think that this seems to be more about your own personal issues than one concerning the division of church and state.

I wouldn't want to train in a mosque, synagogue, KKK clubhouse. buddhist temple, baptist break room, wican coven or satanist church either.

and I hate green eggs and ham.

if the church is proselytizing to people required by a governmental entity to attend then I would say there is separation issue. I vote in a church hall, I would be pissed if the church members tried that crap as I voted.

Call the ACLU, they are good at that stuff, at a minimum they might send an observer

Ironically churches are traditionally the biggest purveyors of manufactured outrage. Why don't they just "suck it up buttercup" on abortion, funding of planned parenthood and gay marriage?

If I found out my employer wanted to do a company training session at the Westboro Baptist Church I'd quit.

I totally get this man's outrage. Its goddamned disgusting. F*#k those homo-hating sonsofbitches. They wrap themselves in the soft blanket of a stern god? Well f*#k that god and the goddamed flock that reports to her.

Requiring public employees to cross the threshold of such a den on inequity is unconstitutional and you all know it.
