Can anyone recommend a short (4-6 miles each way) single overnight backpacking destination near Mammoth? This is a for a family backpacking trip with a 9 and 12 year old.

It would be for early August (10 days from now), so ideally passable snow conditions and not a permit hassle.

Any suggestions??

not a permit hassle

One of the (many) things I love about Inyo National Forest is their fantastic online permit reservation system: no guessing and waiting for a 2 week turnaround needed!

Any mosquito reports? I'm thinking they have to be epic this year!

Any mosquito reports?

Just a hint: They've re-named it the Inyo National Blood Donation Forest.

how's the 4x4 road into Gibb's Lake? The inyo website says there is a 4x4 road to get in?

Duck Lake/Duck Pass area is fun. I took my kids through there on the way to Purple
and Virginia Lakes. There are bears around the lakes below Duck Pass, so prepare accordingly.

Not sure how "kid friendly", but would be less crowded than the other suggestions - a 13 mile loop - Deer Lakes from the Lake George trailhead and descend via use trail that connects to Duck Pass trail back to the Coldwater trailhead. http://www.hikingwalking.com/destinations/ca/ca_ses/mammoth_lakes/mammoth_crest/mammoth_crest_detail
