hey there say... wow, so now that all is well, and things are healing, i can share my feelings... whewww...
how many of us HAVE and yet will, or know loved ones that go through this, at this 'elder time' of life...
she broke the hip, at the joint, and surgery put it back, and no other break, so she can walk soon as she can get back into the 'after therapy' stage...
though, her arm shattered, too, and will take time to heal...
it was fixed in surgery too...
she will be 90, in oct... WHAT an adventure...
hug your moms and dad, you all...
feel free to share any adventure, on this, on
encouragement, or THANKFULNESS, in your family...
i sure hope, and pray the BEST as to any outcomes...
new or old...

THANKFULLY, she will not need a walker... :)
and, did not hit her head, oh my...
i am a very thankful, kid, right now... :)
we have a great family-team, in calif, and all do great for her,
at her time of need... :)

Hope she's better soon, neeb. Falling gets incrementally worse after about age 50.

Sometimes after hip fractures the length of that leg is changed. Make sure to check to see if the top of her hips are somewhat level once she is up and walking. Under 1/4 inch difference is usually fine, but I have seen up to 2 inches. I think its because they are trying to anchor to non-osteoporotic bone. Anyway, having the leg length discrepancy can cause other back problems like compression fractures and adult acquired scoliosis. Wishing her the best!

Healing vibes to your Mom. Life at 90 is adventurous for sure. An aunt of mine, also she 90, fell a week ago and is going through the same hip challenge.

hey there say, ... thank you each-and-every one of you! no matter how well things go, and how long it takes, EVENTUALLY the best thing is:
there is no place like home, for our loved one...
i will be so happy when she can be in her 'spot' with all her family things that she loved...
thank again, so very very kindly...

Thank God she is ok, and sounds like she will be getting around pretty well.
HOWEVER, the statistic are sobering: For those over age 70 who fall and break a hip, 50% are dead within a year. We don't really know why that is, specifically, but I think it has to do with the increasing frailty with age, and the reduction in reserves to deal with things.
Watch her carefully, make sure she is able to access all the therapy recommended, make sure she does not minimize problems that she has as "too minor to bother the doctor"---and turn into major issues. Jump on anything right away. A cold can turn into pneumonia overnight.

I'm learning that nothing heals quickly when we reach an advanced age and it just gets worse after we die. :0)

My mother, in her late seventies, fell and broke her knee. She also badly sprained her wrist in the fall, so it was off to a nursing home with a rehab facility. She is diabetic, so healing takes longer for her. At 90 days the doctor still had her as non weight bearing on her leg and she still could not bear weight on her wrist.
I had gotten some good advice from the doctor that the wrist would heal well on its own without therapy and medicare would only cover so many physical therapy sessions a year.
I got a phone call that they were discharging her the next day. WTF? No warning from anyone. I spent eight hours on the phone with no luck. Just before five pm I gave a curtesy call to her doctor to let them know what was happening. It turned out that at her last appointment with him he had taken a cautious approach and decided to keep her non weight bearing for another ten days. We were at day seven, so he called and made her weight bearing, allowing her to remain until she was mobile enough to come home.
The facility was amazed and asked me how. It turned out they frequently have to send patients home for 48 hours. In that time the patients have to see their doctor and be readmitted. They keep the patients room intact, but it is a huge hassel for the patient, the families and the facility.
Unfortunatly, a year later she still had to have a knee replacement.
Just a heads up.

i've heard bad stories, after the surgery, too, so i was a bit scared for awhile... things about blood clots, etc... :O
thanks for the other heads, up, too... as to the 'discharge' and the
situation as to how you handled it, too...
good job...

I hate to hear that. Sending thoughts and prayers.
My neighbor just took a spill and she broke both her hips, her husband is a great friend and tough as nails but he had a hard time telling me about it... He did and then just cranked the chainsaw and knocked down a dead tree with the precision of a master logger.

My great aunt broke her hip in the basement laundry room when she was around 97. It was a couple of days before the "roomer" (which the family had insisted she take in) came down and found her. She lived until 106.

IF something happens at an 'if any time could be best' THIS is it--
it sure makes a huge difference...
that is what happened, in a way, here, too, but
she was found faster:
one of the other grandsons, just HAPPENED TO BE THERE...
everyone else, was gone for the day, and when she
called for help, thankfully HE was there!
also, say, donini... THANK YOU ... and the fact that you mentioned that, well... ONE of my sons just wrote this, in a gift of flowers to her:
say, mouse, i finally have a printer again, so i will send a
copy of the CARTOON to my mom, thank you, :))
she loves chicken soup, so she will love this...
thank you all again!!!

From my tribe to yours, you have all our best wishes.
And yes, my mom has taken a few tumbles. She has been hurt less since we started making her wear a football helmet.
