You can get laser printers cheap with low page count eBay.
Why you people have so many problems with simple solutions, but can't seem to make do is unbelievable.
Modern people .... pffft ....

Jim,
I use an HP Laserjet Pro 400 M401dne.
It works great.
For a long time I tried to keep older Laserjets alive, but I was unable to buy working toner cartridges for them.
I have also experienced the problems you have with inkjet printers.

del cross,
If a hammer is the only tool, then all problems look like nails. Does this mean that after your planned purchase all problems are going to look like a sidewalk that needs to be busted up? Between my wife and I we have about 8 different hammers - I love hammers.
As to your printing issue, I go to the local FedEx Office Print and Ship Center and get perfect pages printed out for about ten cents a page. I just down load the document to be printed to a zip drive (or memory stick, what ever you youngsters call those things), and Bob's yer uncle.
Good luck with the hammer shopping. I'd probably come home with 2 or 3 new hammers myownself.
cheers

Plenty of sledgehammers lying around Yosemite. Just look for fresh work and the tell tail side trail...

For about 6 years at work we had a HP 130nr that plotted on 24" roll paper.
It was terrible. It had separate removable print heads and ink cartridges for each color. All of which often dried up and clogged.
Now we have a HP T520 which has not had a single issue in almost 3 years.
