Wow, a drone!! I was following the incident at work....Friends texted and said they saw a plane crash by Horseshoe meadow. South of Mount Langley. Big Fire with resources that were having trouble getting to the location due to steep terrain and high winds but reported lots of debris on the ground. At least its unmanned since its a drone right.............

Whoa!

When I was a kid living in China Lake, we used to see old school drones flying around a lot. It was just part of life. In those days, though, they weren't killing machines. They were chased by killing machines, as the new Sidewinder missiles were being tested.

I guy I went to undergraduate school with was the director of engineering at China Lake. Back in the 80's drones were called UAVs, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. I did a bunch of work at a defense contractor in those days on autonomous control of these UAVs and did systems engineering on the RF/uProcessor interface.

Damn. That's an expensive screw up. Here's a cheerful way to think of it: That's more $$ in taxes than all of us reading this will pay in our lifetimes combined.

From the Sheriff's FB page--a post to the story:

A U.S. Air Force RQ-4 Global Hawk has crashed in California near Mt. Whitney, according to the Associated Press. Launched from Edwards Air Force Base, the 130-foot wingspan drone was on its way to Beale Air Force Base when it crashed, starting a small wildfire that was quickly extinguished according to the local Inyo County sheriff's department. The RQ-4 Global Hawk's first flight was back in February of 1998, and does the same job that U-2 spy planes used to using a synthetic aperture radar to survey as much as 40,000 square miles per day. The RQ-4 Global Hawk is one of the largest military drones currently in service with a wingspan 12 feet wider than that of a Boeing 737 Max and weighing in at 14,950 pounds when empty.

So the new generation Francis Gary Powers gets to sit in an air-conditioned cubicle and play pilot? Guess they should have gotten a better gamer. lol

Not that it's a factor in this fire, but one can see drones flying out of the Base at Indian Wells (don't remember the base name) on the 95 all the time. I usually see at least a couple every time I go by. They look like Predators to me, but I'm not an expert.

I'm still waiting for an answer on what Myles is doing/hiding that the government deems it necessary to watch Lone Pine... Maybe they're monitoring how many bolts he's drilling in the Alabama Hills as well?

Myles and Amy should be able to source a bunch of good route names after this event. Hellfire, the missile used on the Predator, comes to mind. Of course Predator is taken. Gilge and Lechlinski used it at The Needles. Hmmm. How about Joy Stick?

Hellfire is a good name. As for a route name being "taken" if it's been used anywhere else, well, not so sure about that. To an extent though, I guess I do agree as I don't like to use names that are already taken - if I know it's been used.

Contextually, I would suspect that the Needles Predator was relative to the movie as opposed to a drone. Not that it makes a difference, just a guess.

Edit: As for Joy Stick, we won't go there.

The Needles Predator is one badass route. Super bold 5.12, climbs a feature that is a granite model of the Predator from the movies.
