Until we witness the death fall of a climber on a well videoed climbing event?

What if Alex had slipped on the crux? (thank the god's not) Then what? What would we do with that imagery?
I, we, all cringe as we watch, but what on earth do we do if it happens?

I'm old school. A purist. Unable to climb anymore I elect to think I did it for all the right reasons. Bullshit probably, but I honestly thought it true. I tend to believe when we do it for the go-pro we loose contact with why we really do it and give away something of the purity of the experience.

Peter Croft said in the original Masters of Stone when asked by Doug Robinson after his solo of Astroman "what do you say to the young guys looking to solo today". In Peter's introvert way he looked at the camera directly and said (loosely), "don't do it for anyone but yourself. If you ever find yourself falling to the ground you don't want to realize you did it for someone else"

It's amazing where we are but the intersection of mass media and falling on a solo is, I think, inevitable

PS
prediction: Golden Gate free solo within 5 years (Documented)

It's happened in skiing/snowboarding. We'll never see the footage. A guy died in Whistler on a road gap about 15 years ago, his name was Brett Carlson. The cops confiscated the footage for evidence.

Shane Mcconkey also died on film and we never saw that either. I doubt one of these solo's will ever be presented live for just that reason. Or there will be a seven second delay.

hey there say, tripod? ~~~ , say as to this part of what you quoted:

In Peter's introvert way he looked at the camera directly and said (loosely), "don't do it for anyone but yourself. If you ever find yourself falling to the ground you don't want to realize you did it for someone else"

those were very very well spoken words of his, even as to
other things that we do in and with our lives...
lots more wisdom there, for sure...

thanks for sharing...

also, big mike:

sounds like the respectable thing, for sure...
i remember the movie, that i saw with my mom, once, at home--
not sure what it was call: "ACE IN THE HOLE" well,
it had to do with some of the BAD sides of human-nature:

which some was:
the misfortune of someone else, PUT out, as for entertainment ways, :(

it is sadly, very hard for one's personal mistakes and such, to be kept
away from the huge vast world, around us...

some things can be used for good, to help others learn, but far too many
are just 'reused' wrongly and make folks, either:
callous, and indifferent to the pains-of-death which the families go through...

How long before a cop get shot by some tweaker when filming a COPS episode?

Or some dude gets killed while filming the Deadliest Catch?

Probably the footage would not be released.

Some jobs are more dangerous than others. Doing your job in front of a camera is way to supplement one's income.

Better yet, how long before a cop shoots some unarmed black guy?

As mentioned anybody who knows the person killed would likely never release the footage to the public.

There is an unwritten rule that you don't video tape free soloers without their consent. However I'm sure a lot of people don't know that. So at a busy crag I'm sure it happens. And free soloers often pass other parties who may be filming themselves and capture the free soloer in the background, and the soloers are in a public place, typically asking to pass, so they really can't stop the other people from filming them. That is the type of footage that may make it into the public sphere. With that in mind and more acceptance of free soloing I'd say within the next 5 years unfortunately.
