I am still perfecting my technique. Had to scuba survey a river just below a large dam that was discharging. Ha but it was fun trying to find holds and keep from "falling" downstream because we were also free soloing the routes. We had several falls throughout the day. The biggest one was my buddy at about 400 feet. Wish the weather was better, I mean visibility.

It is far more enjoyable in good weather.

We have yet to agree on a ratings system, and ethics on the style used. suggestions are welcome. :)

Sounds similar to the sport of whitewater snorkeling.

Great stuff.

Notify Petzl so they can start designing gear for that.

Chickamagua Dam upstream. Visibility sucks in the Tn River so no climbing picks : (

When I was whitewater guiding, I'd often (when there were no clients around) swim rapids. Uh, okay, sometimes the swim came as a result of total failure in the canoe, but other times it was just for fun... well, okay, not everything has to be fun, to be fun.

Hard to take photos of that.

The rating will have to include the CFS....unlike rock climbing the same route will vary tremendously based on the flow.

This reminds me of getting into really low angle slab climbing while climbing out of a stream course during a canyoneering adventure. Sometimes, doing 20-25' sliders back into the water. My good buddy Paul and me once did this for what seemed like and hour on the same problem. It was loads of kicks!!!

Chicamagua? Wasn't that the site of one of those bloody breakups between the north and the south?

Skcreidc, yes it was, and sorry I have been spelling it wrong! Dang Indian words : ).

Donini, CFS should be critical in the rating system developed : ). Just today we were diving (UWHRC) anda very difficult pitches. The damn dam operator I will call " Kenny" accidently pullled the wrong lever today firing up several extra generators. It went from 15000 to 25000 in 3 minutes!

We had to aid climb a few later pitches. we did discuss the use of cams for a very difficult 25000 free. Time was of the essence because 50000 cfs is scheduled for tomorrow. Maybe I I need to hire Alex.

Above 25,000 cfs routes became completely unclimbable for average folks like me. Ha!

One thought... Maybe using O2 is cheating? Still dealing with the proper ethics of the sport.

Do you use cheater sticks or pre-placed gear?
What about power drilling? On rap?

nutagain,
We have employed many methods through the years but never power drills. Each horizontal wall has its own dynamics to sort through.

One interesting difficulty is when the safety officer for Norfolk Southern tells you you need to wear a life jacket. The extra buoyancy Might add to the grade of climb. :-) at least the extra lead needed makes my back hurt.

Haha... We just glare at them and explain we are trying to sink to the bottom, not float! That makes them nervous.
