It is interesting that, particularly as men, characteristics such as strength, confidence and bravado, generate admiration but then, in retrospect, it's qualities such as honesty, generosity and humility that we respect the most.

I wouldnīt say I respect any of the famous climbers Iīve met any more than the immigrant cleaning the airport toilets at 2.30am or the guy that pumps gas or the guy that empties my rubbish bins. Probably my disgusting Euro pseudo-communist upbringing I guess.

Jim i believe i treat the janitor and the CEO with the same set of ethics..
at my last job i told the janitor i respected him much more than the CEO who was a liar.
Mike, i find your reply disgusting. who are you?
Locker gets it...
and it is not about fame, sorry, those are the people i have associated with,
leading up to Tom's divorce, and during mine we spent many hours on the phone together,
every week. He was very very helpful to me and i would like to think i to him...
just because you doubt, or are mistrusting, does not make you correct. it might make you ill intended.
why not just take the positive intended here??

Iīd somehow assumed we all live in the same world, the poor, the rich, black people and white and yellow, the smart and the dumb. I hadnīt realised there was another exclusive world only inhabited by American climbers.

Only one room in a global house party. My personal conception of heaven with no bouncers at the front gate. The food's exquisite, the drink divine and the company never ending.

and yes there are climbers who have achieved high notoriety, had bad judgement, left children without a father, or lived off their wife who was a nurse while they went climbing,
for whom i have no respect
I remember going to a "Famous Climber" slide show at an auditorium with Norm Kingsley, sorry, that is who i went with.
Halfway through the slideshow the famous climber divulged another stupid act, he related his choice to bivvy on the summit of a peak in Patagonia! Norm leaned over to me and said in low volume but high passion:
"This guy is an idiot!"
Jim, i ineptly verbalized, my intent was to say in world of climbing... are we no longer allowed to say within climbers who do you respect? i made no reference to country of origin, race sex, orientation, or whatever else ...
