Looking to get back into sport climbing after several years. Just moved to North Carolina and looking for recommendations on the best climbing areas out here.

Mountain Project is the best place to start for the information you want.

NC is not really known for its sport climbing. There are a few true sport crags such as Pilot Mountain, but for the most part NC is very much a trad state. Stone Mountain is "sport" in a very trad sense. Stone is one of my favorite crags in the country, but you really need to have a solid lead head.

If you're near Asheville there is a solid group of locals who get out every week. There's also a good "underground" sport crag that I'm sure they will tell you about if you get out enough with them.

Keep in mind that the New is not too far for a weekend trip from many places in the state if you must have sport.

Pilot, Sauratown. Some sport routes at the hanging garden at Moore's if you climb hard enough. Cooke's wall. Some at Hawksbill....

... and the best sport climbing in NC....

drive to the New!

If you don't want to climb on gear in NC, your best bet is to take up bouldering. Fantastic bouldering in NC.
