Could you friend me? please please please!!!!!!!

haha, that article is true, I am terrible at maintaining my friendships. When any of my few friends call me the first thing they ask is if I am in town. Although when I am in town I always cook dinner on Sunday evening and invite a couple of my closest friends over to eat. If I did not do that I would never see them. Everyone else can try to catch up to me.

I'll have to reconsider my rope soloing in light of this insightful research - not.

Tami as always nails it. :)

Imho, only way you can die of loneliness is to care about yourself more than others.

Need to think about that, Jim. I think at this moment that love given is free and we never need to be a doormat.

From the title, I thought you were talking about the Case-Deaton results.

A couple of years ago, they found that death rates for middle aged white non-Hispanic men with low education in the US were going up.
The guessed path is low education -> poor job prospects -> poor marriage prospects -> FML -> get wasted on booze and opiates.

The guy in the OPs article, married with kids, is not in this situation at all.

And here I thought that Canadians care. The woods aren't greener on the other side of the border after all.

Isolation = loneliness?

I hope we’re not paying too much for these research studies.

Alienation, anomie, estrangement, meaningless, purposelessness, Gemeinschaft or Gesellschaft, existential angst, etc. have been conditions that were talked about a great deal once organization / society started separating people from close-in social ties and purposes and even their work. Go back and review Marx, or Durkheim, or Nietzsche. Or go back to the Bible and read that Man freed from communion with God will waste to ruin. It’s an age-old topic: “why don’t feel whole?”

You can be lonely in a large family of 10, in a city of a few million people, or even living with a spouse of 30 years.

Me, . . . I am enjoying more and more time alone.
