Hey guys, so I was wondering your opinions on what my first rope should be and the different brands. I was really looking at the bluewater 9.7 lightning pro, the mammut 9.8 eternity, and the edelrid pro dry 9.7. I was wondering what your experiences were with these companies. I notice a lot of people say how must longer lasting sterling ropes are, but their 9.8 velocity has a fall rating of 6 as compared to the other brands' 8+. Any help would be great. Thanks!

What do you plan to do with the rope?

Mostly just sport climbing outside. Not that often too as we have to drive at least 4 hours to any crag and we usually boulder, but I am interested in sport climbing and getting my own gear.

^ I did get the Edelrid Cyrus harness which I like, part of me is thinking "well if i'm gonna trust them with my life with the harness, might as well trust them with my life with a rope"

get whatever is on sale. Also if you mostly sport climb and the approaches are not huge, a fatter heavier rope will last longer and take more abuse. something in the 10mm to 10.6mm range will have longer life..

If you are really serious about climbing you will end up with specilty ropes of different weights, lengths, diameters and dedicated uses. We currently have 8 ropes rangeing from 7.8mm to 10.1mm Lengths range from 50m to 70m
If I was going to have one rope for cragging and cost was a factor a 60m 10mm at that sale price would be a no brainer regardless of brand weight, elongation or any of that tech stuff.

My first climbing rope was a teal 11mm 50m beal. No choice in color, weight, diameter or price. It was only rope they sold in our local shop and they did give me a small locals price break.
