Hi y'all.
I'm moving to montrose co from ca. I'm interested in the Black canyon aid climbing. Are there any warm up routes to get used to the style without having to put your head on the chopping block? I've aided in Yosemite, but I'm sure it's a different game at the black.

Any recommendations on which routes to do first? I'm interested in routes with minimal free climbing.

Also any suggestions on cragging in the general montrose area, telluride, ouray and such.

Thanks
Matt

I've climbed a lot in the Black but no aid routes. Luckily for you there is a new, definitive guide to the Black. I believe that a lot of the aid climbs have had few or no repeats.
I live in Ouray which is home to 150 plus quality sport climbs. There is a lot of climbing in the area from Grand Junction to Telluride and you won't be far from the great desert climbing in Moab, Canyonlands and Indian Creek....enjoy,

I climbed the Wham ridge this summer- fun outing! I'm guessing pure aid routes will be rarities/oddities.

Wow I didn't know there were dyno's in aid climbing. Are they done with cams?

Thanks Jim

I'm definitely excited to get on some new rock. Yosemite tends to turn one into a home body...

Let me know if you come down to montrose for a beer sometime .

I'm picturing something involving a Cliffhanger-style "bolt gun."

Zero hate or teasing from me. Looking for like minded individuals. I've never done a black route but would be stoked to join you on a line. I do have years/milage of wall experience. Give a shout if your interested. Cheers.

Dynoguy, The new Black Canyo n guidebook Jim mentioned is superlative. Also, you should drive up the road east of Montrose to Cimarron, stop in the Cimarron store and talk to Jimmy Newberry, the proprietor, He has climbed many aid routes in the Black and is practically a walking encyclopedia of the place. Tell him I said "Hi". too. Jimmy is the bees knees.
