When I think of "Fake News it's usually some jackass in some forigon country making up something to get clicks so as to make a few bucks. Yet more and more, we are seeing fake stories, slanted media, outright lies and literally tampering with videos to change the meaning from what have always been considered mainstream news sources. The worst recently certainly seem to have been The New York Times, The Washington Post and CNN taking the lead over this role traditionally preserved by Fox News. Even the Guardian was recently caught "misinterpreting" an interviewer and the interviewee called bullshit on them. Seem that both sides of the aisle have their issues, recently it's been directed at Trump of course. But there's been plenty the other way. Polls of citizen trust (mistrust) have the media generally lower than dog sh#t. Today, one of the the YMCA gyms has banned CNN from their televisions. http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2017/01/20/valparaiso-ymca-accused-of-censorship-after-banning-cnn-from-tvs/

I've been generally happy with http://whowhatwhy.org/ They seem to hate everybody equally but usually try and research first, of course Trump is the top of the headline newsmaker these days and the stories don't involve him being kind to dogs or some such. It wasn't that long ago they were giving the same treatment to the last President. http://whowhatwhy.org/2017/01/08/worried-trump-might-blame-obama-handing-means/ is still up as an example.

What are some of your more honorable or reputable go to news sites?

fake news is not the problem. it has been going on for years in print. think national enquirer and all that tabloid sh#t.

the problem is when the general population is not smart enough to know that its fake news. a russian friend once told me, "At least in the USSR we knew it was all propaganda BS, but in the states people dont know."

Most of us who don't live in a bunker that only Alex Jones can penetrate know and trust the NYTimes. Independent, fact-based journalism. NPR is awesome. The networks were usually reliable but too much corporate influence has pushed them into the entertainment field, hence, Comrade Trump.

Just about everything said on Fox is fake, with the exception of Shep Smith. Conservative talk radio is the worst. 24/7 lies.

Breitbart is 100% fake news, as is WND.

I don't pay for TV and no TV comes in over the airwaves where I live now, so most of my news comes from NPR radio and NPR Live Stream- specifically KQED in the Bay Area. No fake news on NPR.

They do a pretty good job of vetting stories before they put them on the broadcast and will always tell the listener when the news that is aired should be considered preliminary. I don't have twitter, nor facebook, I don't regularly visit internet news outlets. If I'm curious about a story I hear on NPR, I'll hunt around the web for more info.

NPR does not have to make a profit and does not have to hire good-looking anchors. Sure they skew left, but that's because they are comprised of lefties (as is much of "mainstream media"). They do try to be impartial despite their personal ideologies. So I take their news with a grain of salt and sometimes curse them through the radio when they fail ask the right questions in an interview or other indiscretions as I see them.

That's a completely ludicrous claim.

Probably fairly trustworthy, but even there one frequently finds a liberal spin.

It's the New York Times for god's sake. That's like saying one frequently finds a conservative spin with the Wall Street Journal. You're expecting otherwise at either one?

I'd say the lack of critical thinking skills is a major problem for us right now. It's particularly a problem among the young and on social media. And it's not just the conservative side of the house falling for fake news.
Many liberals are just as bad. I see bogus crap floating around my Facebook page all the time. And you don't have to look very hard to find stupid claims about vaccines, GMOs, diets, cleanses, and other specious topics being shared by liberals.

Yes, NYT, WaPo, Guardian and NPR are somewhat liberally biased. And WSJ and the Economist lean conservative. But I can count on their news(as opposed to opinion pages) to be well-researched and mostly factual.

Sometimes fake news is done by subtle omissions among factual reporting.

Certainly that happens and has always happened. But I'd still guess that the major, long-standing news organizations are less guilty of that.

The bigger problem is the blatantly false news. Hillary running child sex ring in pizza restaurant. Obama going to put the US under Sharia law. We somehow need to do a better job at both stopping that BS form starting, keeping people from sharing it as if it were trustworthy.

The tabloid stories about celebrities having children with aliens are relatively harmless. The recent proliferation not so.

Americans are stupid idiots in general.

I wonder if that's a nature thing or a nurture thing. And the way it's especially the Hillary supporters on this forum - hm, nature or nurture?

Maybe Trump supporters were just born with more smarts, so they didn't need to get as much education as Hillary supporters?

And the nonwhites with a college degree who voted overwhelmingly for Clinton, while the whites with college degrees who voted for Trump - heck, maybe it is nature after all.

Or what is the difference in nurture between Clinton supporters (like the 88% of blacks who supported her) and Trump supporters?

Oh heck, my brain hurts, I'm just gonna stick with the stupid Merican thing.
