Happy Birthday Beckey!
Not that he will view Supertopo or this thread. He isn't one to make a big deal out of birthdays.
Well, it is a big deal. So many decades of first ascents, exploring new areas, writing guidebooks and documenting mountaineering history. The man still has a vivid memory for details of ascents.
He remains just as obsessive about climbing, though his body is not up to the approaches. And still talking about writing more journal articles.
Cheers!

Met Fred at the Mobil in Lee Vining some years ago. He was trying to make a pay phone call, I asked him if he wanted to borrow my cell phone and he said no lol ...

Happy Birthday Fred!

Yes, Happy Birthday to a true legend.
Here is a photo of three climbing bums in Yosemite, likely from around 1968, which I recently received.
Beckey was out blazing up summits before the two youngsters in the picture - and is still at it. Good man.

So my wife wanted to know if Fred has owned a house in the last 40+ years or has he basically lived out of his car/surfed on friends' couches?
Pretty impressive to still be active at that age.

Fred owned at least one rental here in Seattle that I know of but his support system has always been the subject of some lively speculation. Dirtbag emeritus!

Chris: Lovely photo of you, Fred, and Yvon!

Fred has a fixed address, in Seattle. We need not say more about his personal affairs.

Sure hope he was at least dreaming about mountains, and chasing girls, for his birthday.

Seems like Fred has always been there.

Because he has, through my own 50 years of hearing stories.

Great respect, too, for the folks helping him get along, now.

Fred leaves me a voice mail, so I call him back...

He picks up. He's talking way loud, "Dave?!"

"No! It's Ed!"

Dave?!

I repeat myself a few times...Fred figures out who I am.

Fred cracks me up, "Hey! I'm in a library! Hey, man, I've got to call you back! People are giving me dirty looks!

ROTFLMAO!!

Happy Birthday, Fred-O! Met him when Ran Wenzel was doing a photo shoot with him in 2002. Tied in at Low Profile, doing Darth Vadar's Revenge. Fred floated it. Ran's girlfriend showed up and Fred moved into 'Flirt-mode'. LOL! Good ol Fred!

Fred...what a life! Masses of respect for the man.

I met him once when he was in Cosumnes Gorge in CA with Chris Jones. Fred walked up Test Piece, a pretty good 5.8 lieback/jam, in mountain boots. Geez. And just a great, mellow guy to talk to. It was a privilege to meet him.

I began climbing banging pins in Lower Town Wall at Index, WA in the early 70s. He was a legend even then. Incredibly prolific with a great eye for THE LINE and skilled in all the aspects. He's irreplaceable, for sure.
