Solar panels?
Diesel generator?
Still connected to main power grid?
Coal?
Wood burning or pellet stove (that generates power?)
Batteries?
Power Wall by Tesla?

I ask because it seems that gas or diesel generators could be supplanted as a primary or back up supply, by solar panels and battery back ups for a house?

Grid tied is the most effective solution if it is an option. Batteries are expensive and a PITA. I use the grid as a battery for about five bucks a month, and if I want to run a MIG welder or large air compressor I have plenty of available power.

It does look like Tesla is on the right track to make batteries viable.
