Has anyone been out the East Side in late December with young ones? I have twin 5 year olds. Have the last week of Dec off. I'd like to get some bouldering in. Wondering what there would be to w/ little ones then? It looks like there are some snow parks where I can take them sledding and a Railroad Museum. Maybe take them out at June Lake for a day or two?

Thanks

The problem is not necessarily the day time temps.

Even during the daytime the temps can be cold at both the Happys, and the Sads.

They're 5. You don't need structured fun. Just fun! Dress them appropriately and cut them loose.

Or you could go to the San Diego area, where it's way warmer than Bishop in December, and take your kids someplace that will be really fun for them, like to the Zoo and Legoland, and you can go bouldering at Woodson or some such place.
I know in writing, this will come across as snarky, but it's not meant that way. It's just my thought, based on the 5 years olds I've known, that the Bishop/Mammoth Lakes area is not an optimal vacation locale for young ones that time of year.

It all depends on the kids, and what they are used to. If both parents are gung ho outdoorsy people, no problem. If one parent is and the other is not, it can be hit or miss depending on the family dynamics.

Alabama Hills is a great compromise for fun kid-friendly scrambling, warm weather that avoids most of the storms, and close to town so lower risk in case of unforeseen problems. If the weather supports it, you can go up the road to play in the snow near Whitney Portal or wherever the snow line is, and come back down to camp at A-Hills.

North of Bishop, past the long grade to Tom's Place, it gets much colder at night because of altitude, and you have more precipitation from storms. So camping out east of 120 near Mammoth in the winter becomes a hardier pastime evocative of frontier family living a century or two ago. If it's too much, flee southward in the vicinity of Bishop or back to A-Hills.

This thread reminded me of a week in February a couple years ago with my kids that I meant to make a trip report for and never got around to. I'm uploading bazillions of pics right now, but my home file server has been neglected and is super slow.

Edit: Just saw that you are not talking about camping... still it was a good memory jog for me and I'll still make a trip report. If you are in a heated room, no problems whatsoever. That said, my kids got used to skiing at Bear Valley and Badger Pass. One time we went to Mammoth during a storm and we had to stop early because my daughter became a popsicle, very red feet and I worried about frostbite. Too cold up on the mountain.

We're thinking of San Diego as well. They'd probably enjoy Lego Land more than the Mono Lake Ranger Station.

Just trying to figure out what's possible and what's likely to fail.

We're thinking of San Diego as well.

Glad you did not take offense.
My thought process was that Mammoth/Bishop would be great for the typical 5 yr old in the summer when they can play in the water and run around all day outside to their hearts content, but maybe too cold for them to safely stay outside for the amount of time they might need to use up their huge energy. You know how they can be having so much fun outside that even though their lips are turning blue and their fingers are frozen, they have a meltdown if you want them to go indoors?

You mentioned June Lake. What a nice place in summer for kids to play by the shore. I love that beach at Oh Ridge. And of course the climbers can boulder right there too.

Whatever you decide I'm sure you'll have a blast! Good luck and write a TR after the trip.

Get a room at benton hot springs, comes with breakfast! Can drive back to the tablelands by way of all the petroglyphs.

I think we'll hold the east side trip until the Spring. It seems like this would devolve into a sledding trip in Mammoth with an absurd amount of shuttling to/from Bishop.

Thanks again
