The climbing community lost a young man over the weekend due to demons and a series of poor choices.

Terry was a nice guy when I knew him. Staying sober and focusing on climbing and route development. He would often have several projects on the go at once, the number of fixed lines was not enjoyed by all. He was a strong climber and big on character. Yet he was humble, very accommodating and would often let others get the FA on the lines he cleaned and bolted. Perhaps it was atonement for past transgressions. He was always stoked and ready to roll whenever we roped up.

I had talked to him about coming over for a tour of the Cody rock and was excited to hear he was going to visit this previous weekend. I hadn't seen him in a year or so. When he didn't show with the others from across the hill, I was saddened to hear he had likely fallen off the wagon. A message was sent, the ball busting type and an invite to climb, that will never be answered.

For whatever reason, Terry entered a strangers house at 3am early Sunday. The ending is what you might expect in Wyoming.

I'm sad and upset and disappointed. You'll be missed Terry.

---------------

At approximately 3:01 Sunday morning, the Sheridan Police Department received a 911 call from a residence on the 200 block of West 10th Street. The residence is home to a couple and two children.

According to a news release from the Police Department, the adult female who called 911, reported that a male intruder, who was unknown to the couple, was in their residence without their permission. The woman reported that her boyfriend was attempting to get the intruder to leave the home peacefully.

The adult male resident armed himself with a shotgun after the unknown man refused to leave the house. The male resident attempted to persuade the intruder into leaving the home, however, the man refused to leave the house. Feeling threatened after exhausting efforts to get the man to leave on his own, the male resident discharged one round from the shotgun, wounding the intruder in the chest. The man was transported to Sheridan Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

I just read the newspaper account and it left a lot of unanswered questions. Let us hope for common sense and empathy for the living and the dead.

Condolences to the family and friends of a seemingly troubled person. May the achievements of his better days be what we remember in the future.

Hopefully his friends will share with us their happier memories.

Damn, Wyo, this is about as sad as it gets. Condolences to you and all his friends and family. Do you think he was just too stoned/drunk to know where he was or what he was doing? So strange.

I've seen this kinda deal from the home defense end, and I know that this is absolutely awful for all involved. Sorry to hear of this.

So sad. My sincere condolences Wyo. In that picture above...was that perchance the same Tanner from the other thread? I noticed he was from Wyoming as well. If so, what a tragic coincidence. http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.php?topic_id=2849198&msg=2882326#msg2882326

It is the same Tanner.

How do we approach the addicts in our lives?

I've blown off friends who were late for departure after calling and finding out they were too hung-over or whatever. I think we all have.
At what point do you try to be more aggressive in bringing help?

I hate that this happened, but I'm not sure there was much to be done to prevent it. It is so damn difficult to help people that don't want it.

Mostly I feel bad for the homeowners, they definitely didn't deserve to be involved in this shitshow.

Maybe he didn't phrase it the best way but it is a legit question. Why was he in their house? What demons was the OP talking about? Seems like a fair question.
