The Fresno Bee just reported that President Obama is planning a trip to Yosemite on June 17-19. It reports the itnerary is not yet set, but it's always exciting when a sitting president visits.
I saw Presisdent Kennedy when he visited. In those days, he rode in an open convertible (the "bubble top limousine") so he was easy to see. I suspect current security concerns prevent any such easy access now.
Would it not be cool if he made it to Camp 4?
John
P.S. Yes, it would be nice if uses any photo ops to call attention to the deferred maintenance or, even better yet, to the campsites we lost 20 years ago that have yet to be replaced, but I still find the idea of the his visit a good thing.

cw, pull the stick out man.
A presidential visit creates an opportunity to increase public interest in preserving these resources and the services that make them accessible to the masses, and to make it easier to prioritize funding for these things.
You can't improve or manage what you don't measure, and consider this a form of public spotlight measurement.

he and congress need to get to work fixing the problem
not ignoring it
Have your much coveted Repub congressman pass and send him a bill that covers the backlog. He'll sign it.
But no, you'd rather be one of those the Repubs describe as pigging out at the gov't trough, not voting, not contacting the congressional office, or doing anything else to ACTUALLY change the situation.

I'm curious, Ken, about what funding bill for the NPS anyone (administration or congress) anyone has proposed. The roads in YNP have nice curbs now, brought to us by the Stimulus, while much more pressing needs remain. It may be a master planning issue, but if the administration has proposed a decent funding bill, I would be happy to write my congressman to ask why there's no action on it.
In the meantime, I must admit that Reilly wrote the line of the day thus far.

Would it not be cool if he made it to Camp 4? Too bad Tucker in no longer a fixture there. He'd had some clever comments for him.

That's next weekend (duh).
I'm making plans as I type.
I was on hand at the same time, John. I wasn't in the park, however, just here in Merced following his address at San Luis Reservoir. On this same jaunt he made an address at the new Whiskeytown Reservoir near Redding, as well.
JFK choppered into the Valley after a stop at Castle AFB following the SLR gig.
I believe he was meeting the head of state of South Korea, named Park Chung-Hee, oddly.
Here he is with Edmund G. "Just Plain Pat, thanks" Brown, Sr.
Official gov't archive shot of political involvement involving two well-known politicos.
Wilmot, yer FIRED! :0)
edit: Park Chung-Hee was assassinated, as was JFK. Park's daughter, Park Geun-hye, is currently serving as S. Korea's 11th president. Caroline Kennedy is now the serving US Ambassador to Japan.

Get real.
Congress controls the purse strings. They have been the road block to additional funding. But go ahead and blame the President.
I do agree that it would be cheaper if Obama just stayed home and didn't travel at all. They'll clear it with you next time.

I'd happily defer the portion on my taxes that go to defense dept waste to the President's trip.
What a job, can you imagine the responsibility? I don't think anyone can. Let the guy soak up the views without criticizing him.

I and many other NPS workers have suffered because of that backlog
The backlog has been going on for decades. You can't blame Obama for it.

Maybe Obama will visit the El Cap bridge and suck down a couple of luke-warm cobras with the climber-brahs.

Better yet Obama should B.A.S.E into the park from Air Force One as it's flying over the Park ......

He's probably scouting the place for a suitable wall for the giant Hillary rock carving. Maybe the NW Face of Half Dome. Get David Lee Roth to do it.

Bwahaha, if we have a Trump President we might really see a face carved into El Cap or Half Dome... probably Half Dome because it's higher and can be seen from more vantage points.
