Hello all,

I am heading to the Valley for the early season this year. Looking to show up sometime around the end of the month, on or prior to the 29th.

I usually reserve a site for the first 2 or 3 days and then move to C4, but all the sites are taken this time. Will be leaving June 6th unless I happen to be up on something.

If anyone has some extra room at their campsite, I am willing to chip in on costs/beer or whatever. Many thanks in advance!

So your thread title was accurate? you really do want to crash in a Yosemite valley campsite..

a thousand feet every 3 days.. might not make it down by late may.

Licky already has met with the current pilot via a satellite Skype link, and what he learned is outrageous but can't share the details yet.

What he can tell you is that the plane was a Douglas DC-8-54CF convertible for passenger or freight, put into service for Trans-Caribbean Airways in 1969, and later transferred to American Airlines as part of the acquisition in 1971. The details of plane acquisition by TCA are fairly shaky, with some surmising that it was forfeit in a gambling incident in St. Croix, by the prior owner who was using it to shuttle ganja and cash between Kingston Jamaica and St Croix.

The previous owner was all in the pot (no pun intended) because he took some bullets while flying over Haiti en route to USVI. Apparently his cargo came in a little light for a prior shipment to Duvalier who didn't take kindly to it. It seems that with the fuel leaks after the bullets, and the undesirability of landing in Puerto Rico what with some unsettled incidents in the too recent past, he had no recourse but to dump his cargo over the sea south of Ponce and came in light to St Croix. He was trying to win it all back at the table and apparently threw in the plane, and lost it all. Not sure what came of that guy but Licky might have a lead on tracking him down in Ecuador. Maybe he started an orphanage in repentance or something?

Maybe if the original owner can reserve a campsite in The Valley in May, Vegasclimber can share it?

Thanks Lars, I may be doing that or "big walling" a few feet off the ground in my ledge on the Cap.

Dates have been changed due to weather and some other things I need to deal with, I will be in the Valley on June 5th now.

Just show up with beer and firewood. You can make friends at almost any campsite almost anywhere in the country
