My daughter, I think, and math grade willing, will be heading to Boise State next fall. Dad is excited about it-good mountain biking in town, good beer, sounds like nearby climbing, fun road trip through Nevada and Oregon from Northern California. I read the other thread and was wondering if anyone had anything to add.

Thanks Jeff

The Eastern side of Oregon is fantastic, Leslie Gulch, Steens, Malhuer, Owyhee, Alvord. All very cool places. Then you have the Sawtooth's to the north and City of Rocks to the south. Bogus Basin. Great place.
Downsides: ultra conservative, rapid growth, traffic.

Whitewater - lots of different trips within an hour of Boise. Standing wave in town might be in

Cycle - cruiser bike is the best way to get around town. Mountain biking is pretty good.

Climbing - Many bouldering and climbing areas around town and within 2 hours of town. You may want to combine it with a trip to the City of Rock (~3 hours from Boise). The roads to the best climbs in McCall (~2 hours) are not in yet, but will be open in a month.

Food - generally pretty poor compared to California.

My sainted mother was born in Boise,
Raised by nuns who cared for her soul.
But she moved to Merced,
The next thing to being dead,
Like trading the summit for a hole.

Good choice and best of luck to her!

I lived there for >10 years. The local climbing, the Black Cliffs, which you would never find on any ones list of destination crags, actually has a lot of damn good climbing. Many steep (vertical, not overhanging) routes in the 5.10 - 5.11 range, and a couple of quality 5.12's. Also very convenient, and compared to a lot of other areas these days, relatively uncrowded.
The Austrian hardman, Mike Stoger, lived in Boise for several years and put up very hard routes on the south side of the river. Most of the rock on that side is very chossy looking, except for "The Dark Side" cliff, which has several excellent routes.

Idaho comes in as one of the least happy & least healthy states in a new Gallup poll.

36. Idaho
> Poverty rate: 14.8% (25th highest)
> Unemployment rate: 4.1% (12th lowest)
> Obesity rate: 28.9% (22nd lowest)
> Pct. of adults with at least a bachelor’s degree: 25.0% (10th lowest)

The likelihood of committing suicide does not necessarily go up in states with especially unhappy people. In Idaho, however, one of the unhappier states, the suicide rate is one of the highest in the United States. There are nearly 20 suicides for every 100,000 residents in the state annually, considerably more than the national rate of 13 suicides per 100,000.

Financial stability can also help explain the relatively low level of happiness. The typical household in Idaho earns $47,861 annually, nearly $6,000 less than the typical American household. Perhaps as a result, survey respondents in the state reported some of the lowest confidence in their financial well-being.

I'm somewhat surprised since most of us here seem so happy.
