"“In most places, if you come out in the lineup, wait your turn, give respect, they’ll give you a chance, but these guys don’t even do that,” he said. In Lunada, he said, “I’ve been threatened with jail and rape, racial language.”
Diana Milena Reed, an aspiring big-wave surfer who lives in Malibu, said she was sexually harassed in February while watching a friend surf from a stone patio that local surfers constructed decades ago on the nearby rocks — without approval from the state. She said a middle-aged man sprayed beer on her, made an array of sexual comments, and briefly exposed himself, all while several others looked on."
Fun video documentation:

"“The reason there’s a lot of space is because we keep it like that. We f*#king hassle people,” said one man in his fifties as he pulled on a wetsuit and prepared to paddle out. Like the others, he declined to give his name.
They would sabotage any outsider’s attempt to surf, he said: “We’ll burn you every single wave.” "

After seeing that video, someone should get an old school bus and load it up with Da Hui surfers all riding 9' Wavestorms at Lunada Bay. I'd pay to watch that.

There are already surf rage laws on the books.
Sexual assault is a crime.
Book'm Dano.
Vibing people and burning them on every wave is not a crime.
Trying to blow the lid off of something as long standing and engrained as localism...with a lawsuit...is f*#king stupid. It's never going away.
Just my two cents.
If somebody commits a crime- violence, sexual assault- by all means, they should pay.
But this whole "They have a hut and they were mean to me!" thing is lame.
That's why localism works- most people know certain spot's rep and just choose to go somewhere else and avoid the hassle.
Not advocating violence or even the vibing, but the hype of the "localism lawsuit" sh#t is lame.

There are ways to "protect" your spot without resorting to crime.
Throwing rocks and vandalizing someone's car are crimes.
Go after the individual that did these things.

"Go after the individual that did these things."
Part of the lawsuit names the local police, for not responding to complaints.

Been a very long while since my surfing days. However a very brief fist fight with a local on the beach at Rincon after he cut me off a 20+ foot wave when I had position seemed to restore surfing etiquette for the remainder of my couple of months stay.
That said sexual harassment as described in this thread is absolute juvenile BS and calling the cops and filing a complaint is absolutely the way to go. Get the freaking sleaze ball, want-to-be in front of a judge where he belongs.

Climbing will never have this problem cause the harder you climb the less people are there.

Climbing generally doesn't have this problem because climbers instinctively like to travel.
And the cliff is always there .

Kevin said it all. It's not worth the hassle and hassling.
Punks who weren't even born when we used to surf in "their" spots claiming it as turf.
It would be interesting if someone confronted one of these guys one on one well away from the beach. Oh, someone did?
Yep.
Call me an elitist, but skiing (more $$) never suffered this syndrome.

Amendment:
Right. Not pointing fingers here, however the conflicts, such as they are, seemed to show up about the same time as the snowboarders, but it's the same localism or whatever you want to call it.
Kite surfing used to be pretty mellow, but it's changing too.

Jim, meet me down at Hussong's and I can explain it all to you.
"Dude" is kind of, well totally, retro. Just say "pinche" and add your own noun.
Like, pinche droid, pinche newfie ....
