Cool video but - HE SAID BADGER PASS!!!! they might want to sanitize that video before DNC gets their lawyers on it.

Yes, but he said it several weeks ago when it was true (...and the NPS DID run it by their lawyers!)

cool video.

I always heard the terrain around Ostrander wasn't that great, but it sure looked worthy enough.

So, what is length and general difficulty of the tour to/from the Ostrander hut?
I've done lots of backcountry hut tours here in Colorado, 10th Mtn huts, the Friends huts, and others, and was wondering how it compares--that hut looks marvelous, how is the approach?

The approach to Ostrander via the Glacier Point road is a long day, but not the least bit technical...just a long slog up a fairly gentle slope. I think it's like 8 miles, but I'm not 100% sure. I know that after carrying all of our camera gear and overnight gear, I was pretty beat when we rolled into the hut.

Back in the eighties I did a solo trip to Ostrander. I didn't have a reservation, and had planned to tent it outside. It started snowing on the way in, but it was a warm storm, and consequently wet. When I got to the hut, I got lucky, as people had bailed, and I got a bunk space inside.
The next day was iffy, but did a little skiing anyway. The third day the visibility decreased, so I skied out with a group. there were five of us. I broke a ski pole(bamboo) on the way out, but managed to duct tape it back together. It was an adventure, but glad I did it.

# $55 is a RIPOFF!!

They should have porters on the way in and out for your gear and food at those rates, not to mention the shoe shine service or waxing salon.

Nita, what a gem you are!

I'm hesitating to buy because I can't figure out if free lodging in the unheated tent cabins in Curry Village is included like in years past. If it's included, I'll buy season tix for the family. If not, I'm probably moving on to a different resort.

Most info I saw is 10% off mid-week lodging for up to 5 consecutive days... not promising! Though staying in C4 is pretty easy even when it snows/rains.

Also a question mark- will they sneak charge for the shuttle from the valley up to Badger Pass?

I left a vmail for Shawn something-or-other who is the head of the recreation desk at Yosemite, and posted on the Facebook page asking the question.

Got an answer from the ski folks at Yosemite:
All benefits are listed at http://www.travelyosemite.com/winter/yosemite-ski-snowboard-area/season-passes-student-discounts/[/quote]

Bad news: no more unheated tent cabins for free with a season pass.

Good news1: my kids are older/tougher now, tent is no big deal

Good news2: no blackout dates for the ski season pass.

Good news3: still no charge for valley shuttle.

So only real loss with the change of ownership is we now need to set up our own tent and groundpads instead of using the curry village tent cabins.
