I just heard about this from a mutual friend. I had no idea that Steve had been sick. This is tragic. Life is so fragile.

Steve Edwards was superman;......he must have found his cryptonite. Rad elite athlete;...one of the most fit humans on planet earth. Always pushing, always positive, always trying to invent a new way to get more fit and have a fun challenge of it. Steve was a personal coach for Beach Body;..and helped, encouraged, and inspired my wife on her workouts. Back in the early days at the Gordon Ranch, Steve ran a video store in Santa Barbara. When he came to joshua tree to climb, he would often bring a big box of movies for all the hobos at my house to watch;...we had a huge library of VHS videos that steve so kindly and gererously donated. Everytime I saw Steve out climbing, he was always climbing some hard climbs;.....challenging himself to get better as a climber and better as an athlete. Through his struggle with cancer, he always seemed to be as upbeat and positive and ready to battle the beast. He was amazing and he was superman. Climbing, biking, skiing, hiking;...make it fun, make it happen, and re-invent a new way to "take it to the next level". Thanks for the friendship and inspiration. You will be missed by many many friends.

So sad, never met him but he was an inspiration at our house.

Giving back to the community until the very end, looks like he was putting up new routes in Milcreek as part of a Birthday challenge on the 10th.

Thanks for all the inspiration over the years.

What the ....? Stainless Steve was an awesome dude. I am stunned and saddened.

Super fun guy to hang out with, tons of energy and always psyched. I'll fondly remember the "Castle", where he and a few other climbers lived in Santa Barbara. They had a fun climbing gym there long before most people had heard of indoor climbing.
looking sketchy there...

Steve was a great guy, incredibly positive and super motivated. Whether developing new routes and crags, putting together a local climbing magazine or guidebooks, training, or just giving positive encouragement, Steve seemed to be everywhere.

Terribly sad news.

I met Stainless Steve in Los Angeles around 2000 as I was adding cycling to my climbing-training regimen. I was a huge fan of his Santa Barbara/Ventura County Climbing guide, as it brought a lot of new areas to our collective attention. He was very kind in sharing beta on climbs, both rock and cycling. I could never keep up with him on a bike, he was fit beyond belief.
Here's an example, his birthday challenge from 2002:

http://www.birthdaychallenge.com/steve/results2002.htm

A humble and engaging man, i shared some knowledge of filmmaking as he was involved in a couple of documentary projects. I last ran into him at the Mammoth Mountaineering Store, he was gearing up for an enchainment of climbs in the Sierra.

He was a true inspiration, one of the best there ever will be.

Extremely sad, the man after diagnosis notified friends and started a blog to recap his treatment from health, fitness and nutrition. It's heartbreaking to hear last night of his passing... you can do everything right and still get got. A loss to all of humanity this is.

The tab on his blog regarding his cancer has been wiped, but his page still has lots of interesting things showcasing life as he saw it. http://steveedwardsfitness.com

A round of beers and fritters in memory of Steve. And to his close friends and family, our deepest condolences.

Oh man so sad! I looked up to Steve big time as a climber from Ojai. Imagine my surprise when, after taking my first job out of college at Beach Body (makers of p90X) I find out the Steve Edwards was on the board of directors and a big part of the company. Was funny because no one there even knew him as a climber, just a badass fitness guru.

I got to interface with him at work and we would always turn the convo to climbing, such a great guy. I even remember he drew me a map to some fresh rock somewhere in the Santa Monicas, my wife and I had a blast following his directions and finding it.

See you on the other side my friend!

For a guy that knew how to swim (sort of), Steve was the shittiest swimmer I’ve ever seen. The only reason he died from cancer and not drowning was because he was smart enough to stay away from ocean sports. That’s relevant because, in as much as I could tell over the last 20+ years, it was the only thing he wasn’t good at, and certainly the only thing I was better than him at. If you climb at all in Southern California you’ve likely been on one of his routes, and yeah, it may well have been a squeeze job, chosspile or 4 foot boulder problem, but he made everything fun and was without question the most positive, vibrant person I’ve ever met. Life was simply better whenever he was around.

This photo is from the last of countless bouldering sessions we had together, taken in late October last year. Keep in mind that this is a guy who’d just been through months of the gnarliest radiation and stem-cell treatment imaginable. He was tough as f*cking nails.

ps. Susan Peplow almost killed him in Owens River Gorge about 15 years ago

Stainless Steve and I used to do the most epic hikes in the Santa Monica mountains looking for new rock. He had a dog who could climb 5.8 and we'd range all around. Trying to keep his pace, hiking, or biking, was horrendous. He just liked to go huge and as long as he could. A humbling and sad day to think this force of Nature has moved on.

Bob, that is a nice message and story of swimming and of a grand friendship. The Owens regular story and topic in our home, a significant memory. I can't think of either of you, without that very moment. Thankfully, Steve was much smarter than me and was more gracious than he should have been. Deep condolences to you and his closest friends.
