5.2 is minor. not a minor earthquake if it was induced by wastewater injection or hydraulic fracturing. 3rd largest earthquake in OK state history.
from the USGS website...
A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck in Oklahoma on February 13, 2016 at 11:07:06 am local time.
Visit the USGS event page for more details on this earthquake.
Without knowing more specifics about the wastewater injection and oil and gas production in this area, the USGS cannot conclude whether or not this particular earthquake was caused by industrial-related, human activities. However, we do know that many earthquakes in the area have been triggered by wastewater fluid injection.
This is the largest earthquake in Oklahoma since the magnitude 5.6 earthquake in 2011.
There has been an active sequence of events in this area over the last few months, with several earthquakes in the magnitude 3-4 range. The previous largest earthquake in this sequence was a magnitude 4.8 in January 2016.
For example, the Mississippi Lime Play in northern Oklahoma (from a talk on injection induced earthquakes by Bill Ellsworth, USGS, Dec 3, 2013)
updates will be posted here...
