Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational has issued a Yellow alert. Good possibility of Eddie on Wednesday or Thursday.

http://quiksilver.com/surf/events/eddie-aikau/

http://khon2.com/2016/02/07/yellow-alert-issued-for-eddie-aikau-big-wave-invitational-as-huge-swell-expected-wednesday/

For those who are not familiar with this rare and truly badass competition here is an exerpt from Wiki.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quiksilver_Big_Wave_Invitational

The tournament is known for a unique requirement that open-ocean swells reach a minimum height of 20 feet (6.1 m) before the competition can be held. Open-ocean swells of this height generally translate to wave faces in the bay of 30 feet (9.1 m) to 40 feet (12 m). As a result of this requirement, the tournament has only been held eight times during the history of the event, most recently on December 8, 2009.[3][4]

I hope it goes. I'll be watching.

There are other films and documentaries about Eddie Aikau.

He was a great local Hawaiian Surfer and Lifeguard who saved hundreds of people. In the end he lost his life trying to save the crew of a swamped and capsized small ship he was on by attempting to swim several miles back to land.

hey there say, climbski2 ...

oh my... wow, thank you again...

i am so very very happy to say, that i have been able to learn
who eddie aikau, was, and 'is' as he lives on in memories,
of those that love him, and in the
hearts of stranger, like me...

a fine, dedicated young man, as to what he fought hard to do:

RESCUE his fellowman...

oh my...

first lifequard, and saved over 500 lifes...
and of course, this last rescue attempt:

With more than 10 years in the lifeguard tower at Waimea Bay, making over 500 rescues with no loss of life on his watch. And the manner in which he died, paddling against all odds in an attempt to save his stricken Hokulea crewmates.

and, so much, here: EDIT--ADDED the quote, for that might not
get over there to read it all:

How the entire future of professional surfing hung in the balance. And how just as the crisis teetered out of control, it was Eddie Aikau, as fiercely proud a Hawaiian as has ever ridden a wave, who took matters into his own hands, personally organizing a hooponopono. In Hawaiian custom a hooponopono is a family meeting where both sides air their grievances, express their contrition, and come to a peaceful agreement. This Eddie did for the Aussies, even though stung through and through by their nationalistic braggadocio and in opposition of his own people. Eddie stepped up and was the peacemaker. He cared enough about what he felt was right to take that step. Again he put himself in jeopardy for somebody else.

what another-type of scary thing to do...

Very cool! When I saw the thread title, I thought you might be referring to the status of my boldness on lead.

I have read one article that says you will be able to see it or it will be linked from the official Quicksilver site.

http://quiksilver.com/surf/events/eddie-aikau/#latest

This would seem like another likely place to find links.

Here is another link to the local news. It has a list of the surfers and what heats they are in. Looks like Clyde will be going again, he must be sixty one.. EDIT: looks like he is sixty six.

The Donini of the surfing world..

http://khon2.com/2016/02/07/eddie-aikau-big-wave-invitational-is-on-huge-swell-expected-wednesday-3/

I bet plenty people call in sick that day.. the road from Haleiwa to Turtle bay will be a parking lot.

I know Eddie's nephew, Arcus, fairly well. Got to go aboard the Hokulea on Molokai'i in the mid nineties. It is now approaching Brazil on an around the world cruise. Will continue thru the Panama canal then up the west coast and back to Hawaii.

More info on the Hokulea since its first voyage. Quite the traveler.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hokulea

Another Edit. after reading the first line of that wiki page, I see how Arcus got his name.

drljefe..

Are you sure that picture below , of Bruce Irons, is not flipped? I always thought the break came in on the church side of the bay, and broke to the middle of the bay.

That would be surfers right, left from the shore.

Perhaps when it gets big it breaks on the Haleiwa side.. or inside shore break, any wave could pop up there.

Bruce Irons getting stand up barreled in the massive shorie is one of the greatest moments ever. 100pt ride.

It's been big enough to tun a few times already but the criteria is pretty explicit-
It's gotta hold huge all day, for all heats, so it's an even playing field.
