One of the enduring pleasures I have gotten from climbing is meeting and climbing with people from other countries. During my tenure as President of the AAC I intiated an International Climbers meet in Indian Creek in 2009 that drew climbers from 26 countries. There was nothing competitive about the meet.....just a gathering of like minded people sharing their love of climbing.

The big takeaway for me was that we are all members of the same tribe. Although the climbers in attendance came from divirgent political systems, had different faiths or no faith, and represented many ethnic groups.....when we sat around the campfire there was a shared bond that far outweighed our differences.

In 2011 I was fortunate to be a member of an AAC group that spent three weeks in Iran as guests of the Alpine Club of Iran. The trip was the brainchild of David Thoenen who had ties there through his wife who is Iranian. Again I was struck by how similar we were and how inconsequential our differences.

Next Wednsday I leave once more on a similar trip, once again organized by Dave Thoenen.
I am part of a 14 climber contingent from the AAC going to Armenia and Georgia in the Caucasus Mountains to climb with members of the Armenian and Georgian Alpine Clubs and
the Alpine Club of Iran.

Our group is comprised of people of different ages, gender, and climbing interests and abilities. We will do everything from sport and trad cragging, moderate peak bagging and, hopefully for some of us, we will have the opportunity to establish multi pitch alpine rock routes with our new friends in the Chaukhi Massif in Georgia, often referred to as the "Dolomites of the Caucasus."

TR to follow!

It's a small world. I'm flying to Georgia on Monday. So, how far IS this Massif from Atlanta?

There's a neat little massif a couple of hours from Atlanta called the Tennessee Wall.

Yer gonna die...

or wish you had if you drink the Armenian brandy.
Or was it the Georgian?
But the Georgian champagne was potable.

Ha! There was a label of the Georgian stuff on my desk! Wait, this is
one of their best white wines - Tsinandali. Actually, quite drinkable.

Just arrived in Armenia......five straight weeks in the Caucasus and Turkey. Have fun with Donald and all the other wonderful things America's interminable election season can turn up. I, for one, am taking an Internet holiday.
