Jim Dutzi is on hospice care and is nearing the end of his life. He's weak and frail but his mind is still working in the short stretches when he's awake. If you remember Jim and want to pass on short thoughts and memories to him, I can relay him your message.

Sorry to hear about this. Last I saw Jim was a few years back at one of the Todd Gordon/Josh Reunion events.
Climbed with Jim for number of years in the mid to late 70s and we always had a great time. He had a sharp sense of humor, a penchant for having fun, and was game for just about any adventure.
A few of us once tried (unsuccessfully) to steal the very large Mental Physics sign (Jim wasn't involved) with the idea that we could hang it in the climbing shop Jim had opened in Fullerton. While it lasted (I think is was aptly named something like "Jim's Skiing and Mountaineering"), his shop was the hang for many of the Orange County climbing locals.
Mt. Dutzi (one of the overlooked 14ers) and Dutzi Rock in Joshua Tree is named for Jim.

Here is Dutzi, a classic easy boulder problem at Mt. Rubidoux.
Jim climbed with (and inspired) lots of people in lots of places. I'm sure that most of the climbers in So Cal knew or knew of him BITD.
Forgot to mention that Jim was on the FA of Pig In Heat (5.9) R/X on Hemingway Buttress, with Matt Cox and myself. As I recall, it was Jim that came up with the name -- inspired by an odd looking flake near the bottom (which is long gone).

Hey Jim! Long time, you know, about 35 years or so but still remember going out cragging with you and Bullwinkle and the rest of the "hotties" out near Mt. Dutzi!
I'm thinking the other side is going to be pretty cool. I mean, all our old friends are there, right? I hope the next part of your journey is better than any of us expect. Don't be late and say "hi" to all our pals.

So sorry to hear this. I only met him once at one of Todd's parties. Very nice guy. Randy is correct, he has a very sharp sense of humor.

Don't think I've met him, but the Mt. Dutzi formation was always one of those fun mysteries I never got the chance to check out.
Next Josh trip I'm in. Thank Jim for me for a little inspiration to explore new stuff.

Hey Jim, best wishes on your final journey! I'll see you there I hope.
I have many fond memories of our times together, mostly climbing (Tuolumne, Joshua Tree, Tahquitz, Yosemite) related but also just hanging out at the climbing shop, or the apartment in Fullerton and the cabin up at the top of the Mt. Baldy switchbacks.
A couple from the record book.
6/76 Tahquitz-El Grandote with 10c variation with Randy Vogel
Jensen's Jaunt, alpine style, DE, RV, JD on one rope
10/76 Yosemite-Gollum right and left side with Jim Angione
4/77 Probably our best outing- Over North Dragon Pass to climb the classic Mt. Clarence King 5.4 and Fin Dome 5.7 FA with Jim Angione- and out over Glen Pass to Kearsarge Pass. 5 days and lots of snow!
There are more but...
It was great to reconnect at the party at Todd's house.
I was honored to have a friend with your experience and wisdom bitd.

Jim... it was always fun to hang out in the IDC and some of the other spots in Josh, you were part of our golden age, very lucky to have the first crack at Josh.

Ran through some slides and found this great shot of Jim on the Illegitimate at Tahquitz Rock, taken in July of 1977.
This is right where you exist right out of the steep corner system to a traverse to easier ground. I seem to recall that my belay stance was not ideal, and I was shooting this picture while giving a hip belay -- which explains the surprised expression on Jim's face.
Note the 2 inch red swaami belt and old style hexes!
