Just bought some new BD ovals and used for top rope anchor. At the end of the day they each had a groove where the rope ran. The groove was from the rope wearing into the metal not just rubbing the finish. I have many old ovals and have never seen anything like this. It looked like a cable was rubbing on the metal.

Thanks,
Ron

There was no sand getting in or around the anchor they were hanging over an edge with no contact with the rock.

China? That is the first thing I thought of.

Cleaning the rope to see if it is all that dirty. This is a pretty new rope. The rope was used on sandstone once lately.

Used them for 20 years with no significant wear. It aint the rope.

Yeah, some sand in the rope sheath, then a day of top-roping -- that'll easily wear a groove in the TR biners.

Are you sure it wasn't the indentation from the factory pull test?

The ovals were new. They did not have any wear on them at the beginning of the day.. I guess BD is making one time use gear these days.. I have some ovals that are from way back in production and never have had a problem.

I guess it's time to go back to hemp rope and and just tie in with a simple knot and jump off a big stone to do the break test. That is if China is going to stay in the production of climbing gear.
