I bought this portaledge with the fly for $400 but I have no idea who made it or what year. Any old schoolers have some knowledge they'd like to contribute?

Like "North Face" A5 or "Pre North Face, John Middendorf" A5?

Thanks Braun, im actually trying to find out which one it is because im trying to find a new fly for it. The fly I have is leaking from all 9 seams and it has a good size hole in the top cone as well.

OK

Looks like a Dusseldorf (Middendorf) model to me.

by the looks of how the stuff sack is sewn, I'd say it's post Duece. They all leaked until the purchaser applied seam seal ; )

That would make sense why it leaks like a sieve then. Russ Walling gave me some solutions for sealing it but I thought the fly was defective or something. If they ALL leaked then... I guess I should try repairing it.

get a black diamond simple fly for your ledge.
less seams to leak.
the delux is a pos, as I just returned one that leaked like a sieve. All the seam tape came off first day

If the sides have two pole sections, it's the old A5 Alpine Double.

The current BD flys won't fit because the BD ledge has the dimensions of the A5 Cliff Cabana which is bigger.

Your options are to seam seal the fck out of that fly, or find something close to the Alpine Double dimensions. Possibly the Fish ledge???

Here is the old A5 catalog that lists the dimensions.
http://www.bigwalls.net/climb/a5f/1996catalog.pdf

Perhaps give Runnout Customs a call and see if they have a fly to those specs.

Occasionally you will see old A5 Alpine Double Flys for sale, you just have to keep checking eBay and the various used gear forums. I've sold a few over the years.

It's a pretty cool ledge, one of the lightest portaledges ever made. I found that it cramped my shoulders with a partner and I'm not a big guy, which is why I sold it.

Lambone, would it be a huge problem if the fly was a little bigger (ie the BD/Cabana sized)? I'm kind of in the same boat. I have an alpine double and the fly is questionably waterproof, I need to really test it out before needing its use!

The new BD flys would be way too big, you wouldn't get a good seal from the elements and wind would blow it up like a flapping balloon in a storm. Also the pole probly wouldn't fit. The pole, by the way is a key piece for having a bomber fly in a real storm.

After a quick search the Apline D is 43"x75" and the new Runout Customs UL double is 42.5"x75"

So that's probly your best bet for a modern fly.

Both Fish and Runout Customs say they won't sell the fly without the ledge! What's up with that?

Oh ya, hm. That's cause they don't want you to use an old A5.

To clarify: We don't sell flys for OTHER ledges. (At least not one that we would say will fit) We DO sell just the fly for our ledges (except the Econo).
Here is what the catalog says:
We normally do not sell the rainflys separately. They might be available to current FISH Ledge owners that need a replacement. Check our Repairs page for more info.

Then when you check the "repairs page" it says this:
REPLACEMENT RAIN FLYS FOR FISH LEDGES
First off, we really don't know what other ledges our flys will fit. Asking us if our Super Duty fly is going to fit a A5 prototype sold out the side door in 1993 will get you nowhere. Replacement flys for FISH ledges start at $399.00 and go up from there. The fly is a very big and expensive component of your ledge. Take care of it.

As an aside.... Here is what I told our main man the OP:
Hi ya,

Flys are a giant pita to make, even using our own templates. No way we could make a custom one for what a sane man would consider a reasonable price. 6 seam flys are the standard, and once sealed should not leak.

Use SeamGrip on the seams. Maybe before you do that, get some Nikwax product that restores waterproofing on nylon. I think they have a spray on and a wash in product. Lots of old flys leak right through the walls because the waterproofing was not that good to start with. If you have any worn areas or where the actual coating is coming off, use the tent floor re-coating stuff that you put on with a paint brush. It might be called K-Kote. You should be able to make that fly serviceable with the potions listed above.

Good luck!
cheers,
Russ

And while I'm here, about that haul bag cone thing? Do steeper routes!
