He personally saved 650 Jewish children in the last months before the war.
Then he never mentioned it until his wife found some papers in their attic
40 years later! That's a real mensch.

Heard a profile about him yesterday. An amazing man!

Heroes walk amongst us, and we oftentimes never know they are there.

Indeed Apogee....

Nicholas Winton dealt with the UK end of the rescues, at the time the UK was less than welcoming to refugees and Winton persuaded the authorities to allow refugees under 17 to come to the UK providing they had a family to take them and a £50 'guarantee' was paid. The difficult and dangerous work in country (Poland) was carried out Beatrice Wellington, Doreen Warriner, Trevor Chadwick and others in Prague who also worked to evacuate children from Europe. Winton was apparently in Prague for only about three weeks before the Nazis occupied the country. As he later wrote, "Chadwick did the more difficult and dangerous work after the Nazis invaded ... he deserves all praise". Winton was himself Jewish.

I doubt many in the US have heard of Frank Foley, an SIS officer posted to Berlin who 'Bent the Rules' as passport control officer at the Berlin embassy which enabled a tens of thousands of Jews to emigrate to Britain or Palestine. Foley was accorded the status of Righteous Amongst the Nations by Yad Veshem.

Foley's work was undertaken without any diplomatic protection.

All very brave people.

What you should see is the 2011 Czech documentary, done in English,
called "Nicky's Family". It is streamable on Netflix. 5 stars.
