I am looking for some information about a grappling hook. I am looking for a grappling hook because I have climbing rope that I am going to buy, but I also want to have a tool in which I could scale cliffs and other such rock formations. I trust your judgement, so please reply if you have any ideas as of where to get one; I have a price limit of somewhere around $150, but if it costs more, that's perfectly fine!

Thanks,

I'd try to get ahold of Bruce Wayne. He's gotta have something old laying around.

I use this climbing forum because I know that everyone on this forum knows at least something useful about climbing, and I believe that tapping into that information is incredibly useful for learning more about my main focus this semester, which for you who don't know, is climbing. I also use this forum because the internet turn up a lot more information that a book ever could, and a lot quicker as well; Plus, it's really awesome to see what other people just like me are doing for adventures, which can range from a simple Bouldering session to a free climb up a wall of Yosemite!

Scaling rocks is best accomplished, in the early stages, with a grappling hook. The hooks need to be weighted and balanced for individual needs......no single hook works for everyone.

There is a metric that is useful when looking for the proper hook. This metric combines height, weight, age, arm length and arm swing speed (asp). This metric is very helpful but it's best to sample different hooks yourself.

Usually, after several years, the hook can be cast aside and rock scaling can proceed sans hook (shs).

Most scalers find sans hook scaling to be the pinnacle of the sport and their hooks end up on E-Bay....a good place for you to start your search.

Good luck and welcome aboard!

As usual, agree with Jim.
When I first started climbing, one of my friends used hooks. This was in the days before helmets so the toss was always an adventure.
Fortunately we soon took rock climbing lessons from the Sierra Club!

Rather than listening to the snarky comments of the so-called "climbers" on this site (they're mostly elderly and never climbed very much anyway), you should contact Weld_It. He used to post here, but I think he got tired of the BS. Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if he could make exactly what you're looking for.

I have a collapsible grappling hook but I wouldn't part with it. Great for urban assault.

I hear that the first step to scaling cliffs and rock formations is stepping up to the rock, putting one foot on the rock face, then another foot, using your hands to stabilize and balance your body weight. Repeat and progress upward...

I've heard purists tell me to work on my technique and footwork to get up the rock before investing in gadgets and gear. It's surprising that I'm not a better boulderer, but it shows how much I listen to Purists.

I applaud those who gave you constructive responses, but to me you're a troll.

If you're not, write better...SERIOUSLY!

In my professional opinion, you don't really want to go with a grappling hook. That technology is very outdated.

You need to think in terms of a wrist-mounted crossbow that shoots those mondo-cool, rock-penetrating bolts trailing spider-silk-thin cables, just like you see in the movies. With one of those babies, you just aim at where you want to be, fire, and then have your belt winch pull you right up there.

Really, don't waste your time on old tech! Get modern or get down outa there.
