I plan on doing the regular nw face sometime this season, but I thought a fun way to get acquainted with Half Dome might be to go up Snake Dike with my wife. Would it be "dumb" to try and go down the Death Slabs after descending the cables?

They're not so bad, but it's all a matter of perspective. I've noticed that descending is a very personal thing, even some who climb well are uncomfortable going down.

Remember , before the Internet, when people could actually find the way.

Yeah ...
We figured it out the first time I went down as none of us have ever done it then way back in early 70's.
It takes a little route finding skill.

Sounds like a great idea...and yet it you could miss all the correct descent trails, since you didn't ascend that way.
I would probably skip this idea.
The RNWF and death slabs approach/descent are really straight forward for any one who is acquainted with the mountains.

Descending a major peak in the Cascades with my wife we came to some death
slabs, which also happened to have ice on them. She wanted to stop and put
on crampons and use the rope. "No phukking way! Just be sure to step on
the bits of gravel in the ice and you'll be fine, dear."
She never went climbing with me again. Genius, I tell you!

I just hope that in some circles down the road the Death Slabs don't get known to be the Divorce Slabs.

I remember the first time I was going to do the RNWF... We were stressed on how hard the approach would be to find and such... So I went up there to find the way up the death slabs a week in advance, it was REALLY easy. there is literally a worn trail 90% of the time and the other 10% its pretty obvious where to go...
I wouldn't descend it for your first time though, might get clipped out ALOT! going up is the easiest way to "onsight" it...
Have fun on the snake dike!

It takes a little route finding skill. Not anymore, I'd say - trails to pretty much all climbing trade routes everywhere are highly traveled and should either be butt-obvious to find, or maybe one should reconsider their chances of long term survival in the wilderness and find something tamer to do with their recreation - like ping-pong.

I climb because I don't have the coordination for ping-pong. . .
