ms554...your question also makes me curious...I worked at the Ahwahnee for several years, excluding summers..
Personally i don't recall any long term guests...
I think i'm going to ask an Ahwahnee front desk friend your question..

Perhaps an Airplane weed denizen or two holed up there for awhile.

Thanks Kath...Interesting article...GI's were sent to Yosemite for psychological rehab ...I loved the line of " if the patients weren't nuts when they arrived in the valley , the boredom would drive them over the edge..

Mary Curry lived on the 6th?? floor which was made into a very nice modern apartment... got to go up there a number of times. Think she was up there for years. Saw her there in the summer of 69.

During WWII was made into a hospital for recovering officers if I remember right.

The Grand Lounge was one of the hospital wards. Funny, I just shared the U.S. Naval Special Hospital - Yosemite National Park info with a good friend, a military historian, on Monday.

Mary Tressider Curry lived on the sixth floor for a number of years, departing in 1969-1970. I remember the bidet had handprinted violets in it.

Back in the day they used to close the Hotel after Thanksgiving and reopen it for Christmas. In 1971 I stayed on the sixth floor for that period as they painted, re-carpeted, etc. with a gig as a night watchman. I had been living in Camp Four so this made for some real luxury...

In years since I have stayed there many times but in the bungalows which are a real treat.

I remember seeing a Mercedes with the personalized license plate "DELD" in the spring of 1970 for more than a few weeks, but my memory from that period is suspect.

I also remember Mrs. Curry refusing to allow adults wearing bathing suits into the store at Camp Curry in the 1950's.

My aunt, Mary Curry Tressider resided in a suite on the 6th floor of the Awahnee Hotel and as a child, it was a total treat to go there and visit her!

She resided there until her death in 1970. It was their private residence from 1928-1970. Donn Tressider was president of YP&CCo back then and president of Stanford University from 1943-1948, when he died of a heart attack. She continued to live there after his death, so I bet she takes it!

And yes, it has been a hospital. It was leased to the Navy during World War II for use as a hospital to treat injured sailors and marines.1943-1945.
