So my old backpack died and I went out and got an inexpensive replacement. After half an hour of scissor and hacksaw work, I have something resembling a backpack.

Am I doing this wrong? Is there a place where I can get simple gear?

I got a great deal from a jar head buddy on the rucksack made by arcterx for the marine corps. His unit elected not to use them because of all the bells and whistles.

I cut a bunch of useless straps and hooyahs off of it and I now have a serviceable ruck that is indestructible.

I bought a Northface Cinder 55 awhile back. Perhaps not really cheap but it is pretty much what I want which is a sturdy, simple pack without frills. It's big enough for a weekend trip in summer. Not much in the way straps, zippers and bottle cages. Has a flat bottom so it stands up. Closer to a haulbag than most packs.
