And let us not forget S. Clay Wilson (the progenitor of Captain Pissgums and his Pervert Pirates)
of whom R. Crumb noted, "The content was something like I'd never seen before...Suddenly
my own work seemed insipid..."

thanks john.
that first cartoon intrigues.

god attempts to
instill an exotic culture
upon the wild tribe
of geo and inter-stellar processes.

the wind is vying for king.
though water,
she currently seats highest.

god:
"sit still, wind.
quit your aimless wanders.
we've order to maintain here.
get a job and pay taxes."

wind:
"with taxes all sails will sag.
and, the fires in hell will go out."

god:
"water you can't marry a homo-element.
i say, that's sin!
now go cozy up with fire, he's handsome, don't you see it?"

water:
"but god i love wind. we get on well together
and we can adopt little children.
like clouds.
and storms.
to-hell with that fire fella.
he's all full of himself and
our union only results in smoke."

Crumb Chapter One here:

S. Clay Wilson could only make it to the "Has ST ever been this weird?" section.

Almost Kafkaesque that this thread would appear on April Fools Day.

Saw the "Genesis" at the Venice Biennale summer before last… pretty amazing... they had the whole thing laid out in one big room. Generally, don’t think folks realize what a great draftsman Crumb is. I thought it was the best thing in the whole show.

The Doc. About he and his bros and mother is fascinating, though sometimes hard to watch.

Apparently Crumb spent three or maybe even four years illustrating Genesis, which I just ordered from Amazon. His dad was an illustrator for the Marines for going on 25 years. When he wants to, he can illustrate with remarkable emotional flavor and verity. His charicatures will always make me laugh but he's more than a scribbler by far.

Did a first ascent on the Glacier Point Apron in 1973 with Rich Lee and Al Hu, and named it Flakey Foont. One bolt in the middle of the lead pitch off the ground. We did it with EB's, RR's, and the red shoe that I have forgotten the name of. We did two pitches.

I later heard that it got bolted to hell because we did not protect it enough. Said a lot about the pansies that put the bolts in.

I like R. Crumb more than the Grateful Dead, after 1974.

Me too, but it would be more accurate to say I dislike R Crumb less

I have never cared for the artistic style of either to be quite honest
