Warbler outraged:
The FFA of the Dawn Wall and that's it?? Arguably the most significant free climb in the world, certainly in America, with tons of super exposed high level climbing, photographers everywhere, and the world's most respected newspaper can't do better than that?

yet when I think of exposure in images, it turns out to be tricky to capture the feeling, to create a composition which reveals the exposure... and the revelation has to be accessible to people who haven't experienced it climbing.

So let's have your best!

I'll start, with every expectation of providing only a weak attempts.

^^^not much different than what the NYTimes showed, an image of the WOEML and a scale "human" height, which looked not quite the size of a comma...

but that doesn't convey the sense of exposure that a climber feels, and that is the task.

There are a lot of images of climbing, some quite good ones, by people who post to STForum...
who's best conveys that feeling?

until "paper" video displays exist and are cheap enough to incorporate into my morning NYTimes read, video isn't an option...

the art of photography is to capture the feeling in a 2D, static image...

this isn't an easy assignment.

When trying to show exposure in photos I like to have minimal shrubbery, climber close to camera, and a crack or line that plunges down and away. Especially if I dont have an SLR with a shallow depth of field to give that "out there" vibe.

My friends who are non climbers seem to like this shot of me on CPofF.

I'm also unashamedly a master of the camera-tilt.

This is 5.4 slab at Tollhouse Rock.....but it got 134 likes on Facebook and actually looks pretty cool if you ask me. I frame up slab shots at 90degrees and I leave out the horizon knowing I'll tilt them.

Shameless, I know, but the masses eat it up.

Ok. Last one......nice topic Ed.

I love ridges. But when trying to convince the eyeball of exposure I do one of two things....

1. Small climber, bright jacket, big tall wall behind him

2. Climber three feet from camera, hands visible, feet visible (this is actually very important I have found and I often wait for it or make my poor partner slow down even if he's cruxing) ridge arcing away in distance.

Seems like there are two consistent ways to show exposure:

# Tiny people with scale:

Or flipping the picture so that the air is under the climber:

Those original Shield pics always made my balloon knot tighten.

I think this is from the Sutton/Burton ascent.
