It's not really new technology. I used one caving in the early 1970's called a MAD ( motorised ascending device) I think it can be claimed to be the original. I don't know if the one I used was a copy or not, but plans were available.

http://storrick.cnc.net/VerticalDevicesPage/Ascender/Motorized.html#anchorDavisMAD

I see the original still exists.

And the plans...

That's quite the toy.

If only it could pass knots.

If you had one of those you got 1000' or longer spools. The thing worked for getting the rope out of the pit, too.

That was as labor saving. The rope we used was hauled in on donkey back. Had to use two donkeys.

Ha! It looks like several of us were watching the PBS Nature special on the life of volcanoes last night.

My wife was watching and asked if we could get one of those for her to follow hard routes.

Maybe with one of those I can put El Cap back on my bucket list. And you thought drones were annoying?

Good for belays too. Maybe integrate it with a smart phone. It will be "Up Rope!" and away you go.

Having used a wraptor a few times on a rigging job, I’d not get too excited.
