"f you are skinning before or after hours you can skin up the same runs but are expected to avoid groomers, snow making or any other machinery and remember that headlamps are not merely recommended, you agree by signing they are required."

Sugar Bowl is only free with a downhill pass. Otherwise, $149 for an uphill pass or $25/day. You can do it during operating hours.

I am not aware of any other Tahoe resort that allow uphill skiers.

Used to skate uphill at Boreal and Northstar all the time. Didn't need no stinking permit. It's public land.

Ski threads on ST never disappoint.

We've already got one "it's public land you can do what you want" response.

Skip Sugar Bowl. There is a very well traveled uphill track leaving from the Tamarack trailhead just past Mt. Rose summit. There is even good snow there too. Just don't drop into the wrong drainage and get lost.

Inbounds and solo at SB, you are in a place with avalanche control. Don't go solo backcountry skiing, obviously.

Lot's going on in the backcountry. Read this if you venture out...
