Howdy folks,

No 5.12 for me for a while longer while I continue to rehab from trauma/ortho surgery. Anyone know of any good aid routes in the San Diego or greater area? I'm thinking multi-pitch, A2/A3, maybe clean, or maybe some pins, heads, hooks, and that sort of tomfoolery. I would expect Corte Madera would have an ideal line for what I'm looking for. I need to take a browse through my books, just so far looked at mountainproject and all they have listed is the 30' boulder aid problem below the base of El Cajon.

Cheers and happy holidays,
R

FWIW, be careful if you are rehabbing shoulders/elbows/wrist/finger. Aid climbing, for all that it appears physically easy, standing in stupid aiders for hours, can be surprisingly hard on joints.

Well.... as a San Diegan that tried to do what he could locally....

You basically have three options - short woodson cracks, established free climbs and Lowenbrau pinnacle. There may be an odd aid route or two at El Cajon or Corte Madera but likely they will be guarded by some free climbing - my teeny El Cajon/Corte/Eagle peak guide lists nada.

Your best option is to head to McCain valley where Lowenbrau is a decently long seam. I haven't been on it myself, it's pretty far from North County and has some kind of bullshit dirt road, but a few of my friends have practiced on it and had good things to say.

Outside of that, there isn't a positive story about aid climbing in San Diego that I've heard.

^^^^No, it's true. THere are at least 2 short bathole routes at Woodson along with some thin seams and micro flake hooking fun.
