A long way from where I started
Topic Author's Original Post - Nov 23, 2014 - 06:46pm PT
After dinner tonight I took a quick look at the news, and one of the headlines on the CNN site was: "Stars Shine on the Red Carper at the American Music Awards"

I don't really know anything about the American Music Awards, but I love music, so I clicked to see who was who at this year's event.

Holy Shit!!!!! There were 37 pictures of music stars, and there was one name -- ONE!!! -- that I recognized. Okay, sure, I'm old. But to be that far out of touch?

So here's the list. I'll be interested to hear how many of you know anything about any of these people, and whether those of you who do can say "Yeah, you should give this one a listen."

1. Rita Ora
2. Nicki Minaj
3. Jennifer Lopez
4. Jenny McCarthy
5. Donnie Wahlberg
6. Elizabeth Banks
7. Diana Ross
8. Julianne Hough
9. Taylor Schilling
10. Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Harry Styles of One Direction
11. Mary J. Blige
12. Danai Gurira
13. Lucy Hale
14. Wayne Sermon, Dan Reynolds, Ben McKee and Daniel Platzman of Imagine Dragons
15. Selena Gomez
16. Kendall Jenner, Khloe Kardashian and Kylie Jenner
17. Nick Jonas
18. Uzo Aduba
19. Jessie J
20. Luke James
21. Rocky Lynch, Ross Lynch, Ellington Ratliff, Riker Lynch, and Rydel Lynch of R5
22. Heidi Klum
23. Sam Smith
24. Alex Tanas, Nasri, Ben Spivak and Mark Pellizzer of Magic!
25. Meghan Trainor
26. Aloe Blacc
27. Frankie J. Grande
28. Jordin Sparks
29. Fergie
30. Wyclef Jean
31. Giuliana Rancic
32. Bailee Madison
33. Mary Lambert
34. Lance Bass
35. Lele Pons
36. Adrianna Costa
37. Keltie Knight

For what it's worth, the one musician on the list that I'm familiar with is Diana Ross, but that's only because she was singing about a thousand years ago, and I didn't know she was even still alive.

3. Jennifer Lopez
J-Lo, of course. Not into her music, but understand why she's popular.

5. Donnie Wahlberg
Related to the Wahlberg crew...right?

7. Diana Ross
Wonderful. Lady Sings the Blues.

11. Mary J. Blige
Not into her music, but a legacy artist within her genre.

22. Heidi Klum
She's kinda hot. No idea she actually sang anything.

29. Fergie
Pop Pablum. Not my style....it would be really funny to learn you were into her, though.

30. Wyclef Jean
OK, this one's worth a listen. Or three.

The rest of 'em....just make me feel old realizing I've never heard of them, either. Thanks for that.

hey there say, ghost...

say, me:

only heard of diana ross, as, she was big in my time and we
enjoyed her much...

then, i have heard of jennifer lopez, but only due to this:

where i lived, (in harlingen, tx) ("el valle") SELENA was nearby our
area and very very wonderful and
popular there, and of course, later, world-wide...

WELL--after she died:--there was a big UPSET when they picked a gal named
jennifer lopez, to play selena, in the movie, so that:
is why i know her (jennifer lopez's name)...

had not heard of the others...
i am an 'old stuff' type gal...
but, i have actually a small handful of 'modern folks'
as actors, singers, etc, that i have enjoyed...

not sure who they are at at the moment, though, :O
as, i do not always catch their name in credits...

Still, I'd go with Lance Alworth (he doesn't sing in this)

The American Music Awards, I believe, were created by Dick Clark decades ago, to compete with the Grammy's.

The artists are recognized for the revenue generated by sales, airplay as well as video reception . In other words no "experts" (from the music industry) have input, just the jingle of the cash register.

It's all about the money and not the quality of music. I don't pay much attention to any of the awards shows for film or music.

Looking at the list, I saw a few household names that are familiar; but as someone else stated, not for their music.

You and I like the music we like, while others consider it noise. Then there is music you or I like that millions of other people dig also. Sometimes I hear a song that is new to me, and when I discover who the artist is I am both surprised and admittedly a little disappointed, as I have written them off for creating generic trash. In other words I have to eat a little crow.

Awards don't hold much water for me, especially ones generated by accounting firms.
